I actually loved that job. Worked at a Chevron station in 72. I was probably the last one in California.

I work in my Uncles Husky service station after school in Montana for 3 years.  I learned a lot about cars for a kid my age.

That was the days trucker could pull in and fill up and have no money or C Cards.
You just bill the trucking co. and got paid that way.  I don't remember them not paying one bill. 

I remember being in Oregon for a short period and the gas station had people to pump your gas. Was it some kind of Liberal BS to force gas stations to hire people? It was the year 2000-ish.

In Oregon you can not pump your own gas, they have to pump it for you. ( and that's all they do.) 

But you can pump your own diesel at gas stations.   

There is only one gas station in Washington state that I know of that don't let you pump your own gas. As they check under the hood, tire pressure and clean your windows.  They also have a 3 bay work shop that is full all the time.

New Jersey used to be that way as well. I think you nailed the reason. Probably union jobs.
