I was out running errands yesterday and decided to stop at Wendy's to grab a salad.  The women (20's) behind the counter took my order and told me it was $7.11.  I handed her a $20 and then realized I had the .11 in my pocket.  I pulled it out and told her here is the .11.  Her first reaction was to just stare at me seemingly befuddled by this new twist.  I told her that she should give me $13, you know $20 minus $7.  She picked up the change I had put down and handed it back to me.   She then told me she had already put the amount into the register and she proceeded to give me $12.89.

I don't know if she just couldn't comprehend the math or if this was some sort of policy they had at Wendy's or maybe this location.  I intend to write to Wendy's corporate and question it out of curiosity.

Meanwhile I am saddened and shocked by the stupidity? laziness? of this generation.

That didn't fall under Common Core Math.
More like "No Math".
Yeah, probably the result of common core, and definitely the result of our education system.

At the end of the shift the till would not know how she made change.

I was in a restaurant about a month ago.  I did about the same thing.  The man had to pull out his cell phone and us his phone calculator before he could make change.   They do not count out the change or bills.   Someone with a slide of hand could say you did not give me the right change.  There not way they can prove it as they don't count out the change or bills.

Your tax dollars at work! Simple arithmetic is beyond the comprehension of the students from the government gulags.  However they are probably very good at protesting something, as long as they don't have to think.

I can give you an answer that is more than likely the truth but I may be wrong.  It has nothing to do with her ability to or not to do math.   Solar's toy, unless I am not reading you correctly what she said was the transaction was already rung up.   What she would have to do is to void the transaction and ring up the transaction again.  She has other customers waiting and has to get through the other customers.   Another thing, at the end of the day or evening it could come across as though she was pulling a stunt.   She's trying to make sure you're satisfied while making sure she is covering her own ass and protecting herself from being accused of possible theft.

Another thing, if you told me that I should give you 13 I would've felt like you were being condescending towards me because I know that one is supposed to add that extra 0.11 to $20.00 to make $20.11 and then subtract 20.11-7.11 to make $13.00.   She was probably trying to keep herself composed and professional.

When it comes to arithmetic, I literally can't do it in my head except for certain numbers like adding or subtracting ten and the times tables I have memorized.  With addition and subtraction comes carrying and borrowing number,m respectively.   It is very difficult for me to keep track and memorize the steps and the positions of each number of what was borrowed from and carried to in my head.   If you all can do that, I would love to learn how to do that.

I'm not defending her, she should have been able to understand the concept or the 11 cents.

But there are quick change artists out there who try to confuse the cashier.

I had it happen to me more than once when I was working on a register.  It only took once for me to get wise to how they do it.

I always carry change and try to get rid of it and try to make correct change whenever possible. I find this situation much more than I should.

Save it.  I put all my change and small bills in a Sparkletts water bottle.

I bet there is a grand or more in there.

I have saved all my change for years.  The good wife said take it in or she was giving it to the grand kids.   I being the cheap SOB that I am took it in.  Over 3 grand, I now take it in about every two years.  Even now I get about 700$ or more each time.   It's unbelievable how fast change will pile up and add up.

If so?  Then why can they not count your change back to you.  They just dump the bill and change in your hand.  The only people that count change back to me are over 40+.  As I always count my change before I get out of line.

Yep!  All it take is once, and you learn not to put the money in the cash register until they walk away.

The OP said "She then told me she had already put the amount into the register and she proceeded to give me $12.89."   How can one give the change of 12.89 if it wasn't counted by the cashier?  To me, in this case from my interpretation the cashier counted out the 12.89 and the transaction was already done before the OP could give the 11 cents.  The OP was too slow on the draw and the transaction couldn't be reversed.

Am I missing something?

The count of the money in the register at the end of the shift wouldn't change, whether she took the 11 cents and returned 13 dollars, or if she returned what the register said, 12 dollars and 87 cents.

I don't know, ST would have to tell us IF she counted the change back to her or just gave her the change.
