I live out in the boonies, what my kids call a "dead zone"; cell phones don't work at my home, we don't have wifi. From what I've been reading, Kindles sound great, but if I have to go to the library to download, I might just as well get the books.....For ST, a question, or Solar if you can answer: when biographies or other nonfiction books are downloaded, do you also get the pictures/portraits/maps that are in the books themselves? I'm asking because some of my books are illustrated, and are treasures to me (such as a bio of Henry VIII or Charles II).

Hmmm  is it password protected.  I have Wi-Fi also and a cellphone.  So if you get the 3G unit you would be paying for a cellphone also just so you could use it right?
Your account is with Amazon, so yes, it is protected.
It will work with a wireless, I just don't want to mess with ours, they said we need to make some changes to make it work, but we had such a problem setting it up, that we don't want to risk losing our Internet for a day or so.
Besides, ST works right next door to the library.

I think so, I've seen some on her Kindle.

Sorry I have been busy at work and exhausted at home...  But to try and answer some of the questions.

With the 3G you do not pay any monthly fee or anything to download the books, it is part of the deal of it being a few bucks more.

MM - Some illustrations/diagrams come through but probably not the ones you mentioned.  It really is pretty much for reading.

I do a lot of reading of my favorite novels, health books, and even cookbooks.  They also have a ton of free books or books for 99 cents.  My daughter and Solar have both gotten me kindle cards that put money on my Amazon account so I can just go order what I want.  I have found some very interesting older books in the free section.  Some with print date in the 1800's.  I also downloaded and read Little women for free and have Anna Karenina on for when I am ready.

Since I can download and keep up to 3500 books on this thing I don't think I will run out any time soon.  Oh and you can also set up categories and such to sort your books in groups.

Hope this helps answer some of the questions and MM I still collect my old cookbooks etc....that I can't give up.

And BTW Solar I am not going to clean "our" room.  :) :)

You say that now, but when there is more than a foot of snow on the ground this weekend, you know you'll be pulling out the vacuum.

:P  No snow for us, well we did have some wed about 3:PM for 15 min then it was gone.  7:AM and 14ยบ out the dog look at me when I open the door and look at me as to say he not going out just yet.  LOL The sun is all red coming up over the Blue Mt.  Not a cloud in the sky for about 80 mil around. (yet LOL) The ground and deck all look like 1000's of little diamonds.  You can feel the sun coming throught the very cold window's over looking the Columbia River.  The sun will be glistening off the river water for the next 2 hrs. or so.

Look like your getting hit big time ST and Solar along with Elfie and q.

Yep WT we are getting hit good.  Woke up to a good 6-8 inches and it is still falling steady and heavy.  I just try to take it a day at a time.  At least my boss is being very understanding.  He seems to be taking it better than me.  LOL  :) :)

Can you work from home?  I know my girls can go on line (and cell phone) and work for home on days like this.

Some things I can do from home...others I have to be there for - like meetings.

We were without electricity and natural gas for three days, and there is still a slab of sidewalk ice that hours of determined chopping cannot get rid of, more than a few inches a day. My sainted frau put up with my whining only one night, and then we went motel-shopping. By the time we found one, 40 miles away, it had become a regional nightmare. Three counties were largely without power, about 190,000 customers of just our power company alone.

Inside it was about 42 at the coldest, but outside it was thousands of downed tree limbs and three outside tree-service contractors from three states, working 24/7 to get roads clear and room for the power companies to restore downed lines. Two trees on our property took massive losses from the ice, but our house was undamaged as far as I know.

I was NOT fit company for this board until today. Even the one night of actual heat didn't help that much, because outside our motel room it was never more than freezing (and usually much worse).

As overnight temps fell below 19 degrees, our car wouldn't start without an hour of a heat lamp directly over the engine. To get that lamp in a strange town and STILL have enough time to get the car started BEFORE check-out was an adventure in itself, and a 2-mile hike for Milady.

Tomorrow we go back up there. I left my wallet in my haste to leap into that newly-started car. Just in time to enjoy the $3.39/gallon gas prices that are now common to our area. I think I already know who's driving back home.

The reason he put a halt on me buying anymore is because it fills three rooms in our house, also my DIL has some at their place, and my MIL some at hers. My library dates back to before Mr. Mouse and I were married, and contains some real classics that I found at yard sales and such. I really do have to go through and purge, he is right (he usually is), because I want to add to my WWII collection, and my Tudor/Stuart one. I don't quilt, but my MIL does, and she loves it. I garden, and hook rugs.

(that's the reason my DIL recommended Kindle to me, BTW)  :))

Here's a suggestion that might pick off more than one bird for you, MM. Try a website called Bookmooch -- www.bookmooch.com

I was a member until I had to move twice in about six months... I need to get signed up again. Anyhow, if you can bear to part with some books, this is a good way to do it while gaining access to a TREMENDOUS source of free reading material. Unless they've changed things, membership is free; the only thing you pay for is postage when YOU mail a book TO someone.

Keep in mind that most of the titles available are softcover (naturally), but if it's the actual content you're after -- along with that priceless feel of bound paper in your hands -- who cares?

The power was back on when we got home Wednesday. A good thing, as power was back on at work, too, and I had to go to work.  It's much better now, even though the television set seems to have fried something during the extreme brownout we had. Not quite no power, but not enough to run a light bulb at more than night light brightness. I told him to start shopping for a new TV if he wants to watch his movies on the big screen. ;)
