I went to the store to buy some deodorant this morning. I knew about what the cost with tax would be. I knew I had that much change. It came to $5.32. I had a $10 and the change and told the clerk, a young lady, I had the change. She rang it up and immediately started to give me 4 $1's and the change. I told her I had the change and gave it to her. She was totally befuddled and I had ti finally tell her to just give me a $5. Folks, it is pitiful and sad out there.

I see it ever week.  No one teaches them how to set up a cash drawer.  Bills are turned every which way.  One of the first thing I learned was all bill are facing up and the same way in a cash drawer.  Also in your wallet.  It's so bad I no longer give them change.  I just put it into 2 large coffee can and take it to the bank once a year.   It comes out to about 800$ each year.

When the power is out they can not sell anything.   One they do not know how to open the drawer and two the cash register will not tell them how much money to give back.

But somehow short them one penny on a paycheck and they know it.

Yup - we price EVERYTHING in whole dollar amounts - we caught on real quick, even something for 50 cents was creating problems, not for us, but customers... they give us $5 for a $1.50 item, and stand there trying to count what we gave them back, even after counting it into their hand - 1.50, 75, $2, $3, $4, $5....  nothing but whole dollar amounts, preferable in $20 increments.

And we get asked all-the-time, "you take plastic?"

"NOPE - everything would cost more, there should be an ATM nearby."

"Would you take a check?"

"NOPE - just cash...   last time we took a check it bounced."
A $20 check bounced, bank charged is $35 - the thief beat us out of $55 and the merchandise.  We stopped talking checks.

Guy sends a personal check to us in the mail for $7 - we returned it, because the minimum order is $20.
Everything the guy READ said the minimum order was $20... he could READ my address, write a check (couldn't do a postal MO), fill out an envelope, lick a stamp - but follow directions - nope!

I really like it when some old fart starts getting all self-righteous, running his mouth, and telling us "how we ought to conduct business, set prices", etc.   Even better when some guy, someone else TOOK for big bucks, and thinks our better made, less expensive product "can't be better - and be less expensive" - pissed at "us" because someone "took" him.  But, when we tell him we can make his junk work better with our modification part to "fix" his expensive junk - he jumps all over it.   go figure.
