Title: It's That Time of Year
Post by: crepe05 on October 01, 2010, 02:11:50 AM
October is Breast Cancer month and I always post something to encourage women to get their mammorgrams.  It's 14 years this month since a biopsy showed I had breast cancer.  I had a modified radical mastectomy on November 11, 1996, when a cluster of lymph nodes were also removed.  It was discovered that out of a cluster of 14 lymph nodes removed, 12 of them had cancer.  Bummer!  I knew I was a goner.  Obviously, I'm still around.  I did my chemo and was on daily meds for 10 years.  Now, I'm not taking anything to prevent a recurrence (nothing available right now) but I'm having fun.

The reason I post this info every year is to enforce the good things about having a mammogram.  That's where my cancer was discovered.  We never did feel the tumors.  They were very small.  Please ladies, do your monthly breast exam and have your annual mammogram.  There's so much that's been discovered in the time that I've been a survivor that your chances are good for living at least five years at least.  They're not so good if you ignore lumps or don't get a mammogram.  Guys, do your wives, girl friends, moms, sisters, whomever a favor and nag them to do those things.  Please!  mr crepe and I have lost so many friends.   Also, don't believe it if a doc says the woman is too young to have breast cancer.  The youngest friend that we knew was 27, with three pre-school daughters. Sad, sad, sad.

If you got this far in your reading,  thank you for taking the time.  It really means a lot.

Thanks for posting.  I have been having them since I was 38.  I have had a few scares but so far have been luck.  Glad to hear you are beating it.  :) :)

Those "scares" really suck, don't they?  Glad that you're okay.  Keep up with the check ups, etc., and things will continue to be okay.   :D

Now, I'll make it political so maybe guys will get interested.  Down with politicians who say that mammograms aren't needed.

Keep in mind men need to also be checked.  Ladies are not the only one with that problem so on your yearly add them also.   8)

Thanks, walkstall.  In the past I have always included men.  This year, at least 4000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer.  That's too many.

Did you know that Montel Williams (is that his name?) had a double mastectomy when he was in the Navy as a young man.  He's more than willing to talk about it so that men realize that lumps in their breasts are nothing to scoff at.   Men, lumps in your breasts are not an extra little muscle because you're so physically muscular and in good shape.   ;D

Also, everyone needs to know that the vast majority of lumps in men and women's breasts are not  malignent.  Hang onto that fact.  It's true.

That is also true with Prostate Cancer I found out this year.  But that was a very long, long two weeks in my life before finding out I was ok.  ;D

Not only do I give money, but I also routinely offer to give thorough checks to anyone who hasn't had it done yet.

Luckily for you, at your age, it is better to leave it alone, the treatment can be debilitating.
My dad was diagnosed with it at 75, but his doctor advised him to leave it alone, he did, and died at 93 from an accident in the yard, but the cancer never gave him any problems all those years.

I have a "Fight Like a Girl" breast cancer shirt.  Did you know that is a song written for the song writers friend when the friend was going through treatment?  From what I understand, the friend didn't make it.  It's kind of a cool song.

Here is a performance of the song "Fight Like a Girl".  Personally, I always tear up at the last verse.  Be prepared to also, since you're familiar with the disease.  I do love the song.
