Turkeys Originated in Mexico

The type of turkey we have on Thanksgiving originated in Mexico, so why do we call them turkeys? Does it have anything to do with the country named Turkey?

Europeans called the birds they ate turkeys because the bird got to Europe through people called "Turkey traders" who came to Europe from the Near East.
