Health officials are warning about a second unvaccinated California college student who may have exposed thousands to measles on public transportation even as cases of the highly contagious disease have reached 115 nationwide.

A University of California, Berkeley, student has been isolated after tests confirmed measles Friday, Berkeley public health officials said. The student returned on a domestic flight to Oakland on March 30, and then rode the Bay Area Rapid Transit system, or BART, to class from April 1 to April 3.

BART transports about 400,000 riders each weekday.

Measles? I didn't think it was such a big deal, just a childhood disease, something I thought we all got, just like chicken pocks.

For every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die.  One out of 20 gets pneumonia.

About one out of 10 children with measles also gets an ear infection, and up to one out of 20 gets pneumonia. About one out of 1,000 gets encephalitis, and one or two out of 1,000 die. Other rash-causing diseases often confused with measles include roseola (roseola infantum) and rubella (German measles).

While measles is almost gone from the United States, it still kills an estimated 164,000 people each year around the world.

Apparently with some people it's become trendy to not vaccinate their children against diseases. I'm not certain which diseases children are usually vaccinated against nowadays, but I've got several acquaintances who've decided not to vaccinate their kids because they think it's "unnatural", or they think it causes autism. I guess we'll see the repercussions in the coming years.

I guess there are some that don't mind playing Russian Roulette with there kids.  When your my age you see what childhood diseases can do to both kids and adults.  You don't want to see polio again as I have.
