Great Razor: Harry's

Like many, I started out with the barber razor, moved on to the injector blade, then they invented the TracII razor, I was in Heaven, but more came out with new gimmicks and I tried nearly all of them.
Then they came up with the 5 blade system, it's better than the rest, gives a good shave but damned expensive.

Well Toy surprised me with Harry's razor, bought me a years supply of blades to boot, so I gave it a shot and to my surprise, it's the best shave I've ever had in my entire life.
I kid you not, the guy perfected the 5 blade system and it's easily 10 times the quality of any blade out there, and the best part, it's probably half the cost of any blade out there.

The only downside I can find is the handle, it's smooth and when it gets soapy, you can't hang onto it at all.
I'll be notching it soon.

OK, I got this for Christmas, which means I used it for the first time on Dec 25th, well I just switched out the first blade only because I figured it had to be time to change.
I was wrong, it had at least another month of shaves left in it, but regardless, I got at least 30+ shaves, when even the top brand razors gave me three shaves pr blade at best.

I don't have a clue what sets Harry's apart and above all the rest, but no doubt it comes down to quality across the board.
I'm telling ya, on a price comparison, instead of a buck a shave for store bought, Harry's is pennies and is hands down the smoothest shave I've ever had.

For those wondering, I did not get paid to post this nor do we do ads and I'm in no way connected to Harry's, I just want to share with others what I believe to be the best and lowest cost razor on the mkt.

Here is another helpful hint for people (like me) who are obsessed with saving money. I found out that if you put a razor blade in mineral oil right after using, it will not degrade AT ALL. I have been using the same inexpensive double-edged razor for three weeks and I shave every day. The reason is apparently that blades corrode when exposed to air (rust?) and the oil is a waterless liquid which prevents both air and water from acting on it. I immerse the blade so that it is entirely coated with oil immediately after shaving. It doesn't seem to matter whether it still has a little water on it when it goes into the oil, it still doesn't rust at all. It remains like new for weeks and weeks.

Mineral oil is about $1.50 a bottle at Walmart and lasts for months. I just pour enough into a cup ( I use Styrofoam because I like to live fancy) to cover the blade then shake off the excess back into the cup before I shave.

So my net cost for shaving has gone from low to almost non-existent. Only thing is PLEASE don't tell anyone where you heard this. I am afraid that the shaving blade industry will come up at me with bravos and I'll end up face down in a dumpster.

BTW, the reason that Harry's blades are so long lasting is that they are probably made from (low-grade) stainless steel instead of regular metal. SS doesn't rust or corrode easily - it's molecularly fascinating - each SS molecule has an outer shell of chromium atoms. Chromium doesn't react much at all with water or air so it doesn't rust (rust is iron OXIDE :iron that has been oxidized). As long as the chromium atom shells are intact, stainless steel will never rust.

The only way to really mess up a stainless-steel edge is to fracture it or otherwise disrupt the chromium coating (like with harsh chemicals that cause oxidation). Water alone generally won't oxidize chromium but something like bleach or abrasive cleanser will.

Mine last about 3 months being that I am a Half-breed.  (is that racist)
I did not start shaving until about 30 as I remember.

Just don't let the wife use them.

"I didn't start shaving until I was 30..." That's very interesting. Are you sure that your parents were HUMAN !?!

My mother was full Western Cherokee and my father was Heinz 57.  So with my dad I am not sure.

I naturally assumed all top brands were stainless?

Great blades.  Been using them for quite a long time.  I have a heavy beard yet the blade lasts for a good 2 or three months.

Wow.

I thought it was all hype. (like Solar Panels on Roofs).

I may actually try Harry's.

So tell me, when I place an order should I tell them Mark Levin, Rush, or someone else recommended them ? Might as well plug a Conservative Show while I'm buying.

My blades (not Harry's - yet) get clogged up with tiny particles of hair. I blow them out with Compressed Air, which is far from free.

Does Mineral Oil help this issue ?

Mineral oil only protects the blades between saves, the English used to use Mayonnaise to shave with, and the oils preserved the blades, (read about it in the 60s).
Hair will swell when soaked in mineral oil, so be sure and thoroughly clean the blades first.

Yeah, I too thought their claims were hyped as well, and had it not been a gift, I'd probably be paying too much for a bad shave to this day.

The mineral oil causes the hair particulates to be easily rinsed off prior to reuse (hot water) and one can see the particulates which collect at the bottom of the receptacle. If there are concerns about cleanliness (contaminants) perhaps changing the oil would ameliorate that. I have never had any problems in this regard, and I never change the oil, I only replenish it when it get too low to cover the blade when it is returned to the receptacle. But then I shave roughly once-per-week with selsun shampoo (cheaply had at Walmart) to kill any fungal growth on follicles and likely on the blade as well. White vinegar also kills fungi efficiently but it can't be left standing  in open air because it evaporates and smells terrible too.
