Good Samaritan Returns $23,000 in Cash, Jewels

(Nov. 6) -- A regular Joe from New Jersey may have become the new best friend of a woman who left behind a backpack filled with $23,000 in jewelry and cash while hiking in a state park.

Joseph Monto, a 33-year-old utility company mechanic, spotted the backpack while driving by the parking lot for the Ramapo State Forest in Oakland, N.J., The Record newspaper reported. Inside was $5,000 in cash and roughly $18,000 worth of jewelry that included family heirlooms.

$18,000 worth of jewelry is not much in this day and age, that could be just one or two rings you take off.

Knox was visiting from Maine and helping her parents move into a retirement community. The $5,000 was a downpayment for their home, she explained, adding that she carries the backpack and jewelry with her when she travels.

If she is that worried about the jewels then they should be in a safety deposit box.  It appears she is a treasure hunter....

Monto finally tracked down Knox, who explained that she was in the park on a type of treasure hunt known as geocaching. The notations and codes Monto found were GPS coordinates and directions for locating the treasure, according to the NBC affiliate in New York.
