Good Morning Living Room People

We live in a small town in the Sierra Nevada mountains and it's cold and boring here.
Hubby and I are thankful that we are retired and don't have to go out in the cold. But boy life can get
soooo boring this time of year. One can only do so many puzzles or watch so many movies before going bat crap crazy.
For years, I've created and sold my paintings, but even that is now boring.
We really need a new at home hobby. Nothing we need to make money with, just a passion, something worth getting out of bed for. Any ideas from retired Winter shut ins?

Solar

I know what you mean, I only get 4 hours of actual usable sunlight for these 4 months out of the year, so I got in the habit of video games to burn through my time, that, and starting this forum keeps me busy.
Beyond that, I would prep outside in the fall so I could do inside projects in finishing my house, there's always something to do.

But I do share your boredom, but look at the bright side, you could be stuck in the valley fog and driving like a snail to the mall and paying exorbitant prices for stuff you can get online far cheaper.
Truth is, I'd rather be bored in the Sierra, than stuck in the valley any day.

Oh, and I bought a Polaris RZR 900 to rip up the forest when the need arises, that's something you can't do in the valley.

Oh, yes, Solar, totally agree it could be worse. I was born in Lodi and can remember well the cold, damp foggy days.
During the Winter months, during the days, we do get a lot of sun in our South facing windows, which is a blessing.
Come Summer I will be complaining about the outside work that never ends.
During my working years, I had no time to complain.
So, the Polaris is a snowmobile? What areas are you allowed to ride it in? Not many areas here where one is allowed to ride in anymore. We have quads we take out in the warmer weather.

Nay, it's a side by side like this one.

I have a quad, but I bought this so the wife and I can get out together, though, I like to actually drive like I stole it, which freaks her out.
Can't wait for the snow to hit, there is not a soul in the forest, after September, the locals reclaim the land and the flat landers are nowhere to be seen.

Ughh, Lodi? Though Sac wasn't all that different in the 50s and 60s, town rolled up after 5:00 PM and there wasn't a thing to do.
Come Winter, fog, FOG.....As a kid growing up in the valley, I thought everyone had fog, till I was a 12 yro and dad took us to the foothills for the day.
I was shocked when we broke through the fog layer, it was like Heaven, there was a sun in the sky, I told dad to stop, I had to bask in the warmth of that big glowing orb in the sky, pay homage to its existence. I truly was in awe, I really thought the fog was miles thick, I'm guessing, because I had no idea the sun actually cut the clouds in the Winter.

From that day forward, I promised myself I would one day escape the confines of the valley and buy land in the mountains, been here 30 years now and can't imagine any other lifestyle. I'm a mountain man for life.

Nice!!!
Yes! Hubby has been looking for one of these, but for warm weather only, as I don't do cold very well. Thinking of maybe trading in the Honda quads for one, as we are getting a little old to be handling them. Hubby did mention that the Polaris was a good machine, but expensive.

We get socked in with Pogonip fog sometimes in the Winter and will take a day trip up to Chester Ca. to get out of it.
I know that feeling of rising above the fog and into the sun. It's heavenly.

Yeah, Polaris is one of the pricier UTV' out there, but you can pick up older models that didn't sell, just make sure you get electric power steering, you can also get full cab enclosure, something I'll be getting for next year, but this year I'll get Toy a 12v wrap to keep her warm. We already have heated jackets and gloves, and boy, do they get hot and they don't cost any more than any other good jackets or ski gloves.

If you don't need speed, you can get a 2016 new RZR 500 for under six grand, assuming they're still available.
Just stay away from the diesel models, they aren't what one expects from real diesel engines, they're just too underpowered and you don't get the longevity you'd expect from one.

Nope don't need the speed, just the ability to explore the back lands.
Interesting about the diesel. Thanks for the info. Will print it off and give to hubby.

I have the Polaris 850 sportsman with a pop up rumble seat in the back.  We are on 380 acres and there over 250+ back grave road between farms you can play on year around.  I have a  full Carhartt suit quilt lined for winter play.

Town is just under 70 mile away, so that one day out of the week shopping.  You can get all the way into town on the back grave roads between farms if needed.

Well after working 65+ years a man need his play toys.

The good wife Quilts all year round for the last 50 years.  She retired as a lieutenant from the sheriff office.

Good Morning Living Room people! It's cold here.

You can well bet that any man needs and greatly deserves his play toys after working for 65 years. Just WOW on that.
Hubby was able to retire at 55, so now at 73 he has had many years of a nice retirement, which pleases me.

I was a, old fashion, stay-at-home mom and spent my years holding down the home front. Had many hobbies, of which quilting wasn't one of them. Although, the artist in me has always been interested in doing it. I'd love to see a photo of one of your wife's best creations.

We love our home here in the Sierras, but the Winter cold gets old. We have a nice motor home and will take it down to the warm Southern desert around February, for a couple of weeks. We would miss our house too much to be full time snowbirds. Not that it isn't tempting when we are waking to 10 degree mornings.
