Dear Mountie,

I'm up in Queensland...a little city called Toowoomba. It has rained a little bit here since May but we're slipping back into drought...not a big deal as we have our own bore and stuff. The local big dams are full but strange as it may seem I didn't even see snow until I was about 50 and went to Europe on holidays. it's cool stuff...pardon the pun.

Perth is good so I hear but a bit away from my usual haunts...never actually been there. I did advise a backpacker in Europe who was planning to walk from Cairns to Perth to take a cut lunch.

OK: in Europe you have Bear Grylls and "Man against Wild"...here we call it camping. The spiders are great and I enjoy taking my pet funnel web for walkies. It also keeps the cats away.

Greg

I can't tell if you are joking or not, the most hard and strong endurance persons I have met are australians. While I lived in Perth with my single mother my neighbour sort of became my surrogate father for my time there and he was crazy, he used to live in the outback catching wild sheep for a living, walked barefoot on scorching pavement, strong and didnt mind hard work even in 45 degree heat. Picked up huge spiders with his hands and threw them out into the bush as he didnt want to hurt them or kill them, same with snakes and scorpions.

I have been to Cairns, Melbourne and Sydney too but Perth was the more beautiful city in my opinion. Mostly because the city center is very concentrated over a small area with the rest being suburbs. Sydney had too many immigrant and slums for my taste, and you could see fires everyday from insurance scams. Melbourne climate reminded me too much of Norway and I only spent 3 days there.

Sorry 'bout that, mate. The bit after OK is fake....though I do enjoy camping. The funnel web is a large local spider.....just joking about having one as a pet. I haven't worked with stock but I've worked on farms during Uni holidays and dad always had a hobby farm....plus a factory that made Besser Blocks....so am no stranger to hard work. I've known blokes like your mum's neighbour and have done contract fencing in that sort of heat...but snakes are best avoided unless you know that they're only carpet pythons. I avoid venomous ones. I did have a pet bearded dragon lizard though when I was a kid...used to rest him on my shoulder and walk up Surfers Paradise with it...but that was when I was twelve. I've been through both bushfires (1983: Adelaide Hills) and floods quite regularly...but such is life.

I haven't been to Norway or the States, but I lived in the UK for a year and have done a couple of other trips OS....and intend to again. I did the "big leg" from Bulgaria to Ireland stopping at many places in between and really enjoyed walking ...loved the Lakes District and their low "Mountains"....though used my sandals when walking in Spring/summer. Winter was different...full cold weather kit of course.

The city I prefer is Adelaide but as I said I haven't been to Perth. But maybe one day.

Most of my friends are in Melbourne, Greg.

Is that far from you?

I'd like to take a trip on the Ghan train.

A cold winter is predicted.
The birds and squirrels are sure busy burying seeds.

It's warming up here...Spring is in the air. I've been away fishing for a bit but came home with a new coconut palm and several boxes of bromeliads...the garden is never far from our thoughts.

Nice!  Now if you do any walk abouts I must know, lol.  I am trying hard to get spring and summer in doors, lol.   I think it will make me nuts this first time out. But for now I am busting out all things fall andf gathering for the winter stock.
Nice to meet you.

We are expecting the same.  The geese are on the move here so in comes the hummingbird feeders since they hitch a ride on the backs of geese to go to where ever they go.. So it begins the crunch time for putting the yards aslepp for the snow.

Funny you should say that. The traditional walkabout was an aboriginal thing; just leave for a few months and then reappear in one's own time. I enjoy bush walking nearby so that is as much as I do nowdays...though I did go on a three day hike a few weeks ago. Full moon in the Oz bush at night....wonderful.
