I just hope my theory is correct.
One would think if our forum can't log into them, then their site must be down as well, anyway, it has been in the past.

Not entirely true. Close enough from some viewpoints, I admit.  ;D

Choosing a hosting company for the first time is always trial and error. I went through several, myself, trying to set up a blog.

Do be sure that you can actually KEEP your site name. Some hosting companies register it in their name "for privacy protection," and you can't get it back (or go through hell trying to register the old (in this case, present) site name with a new host).

That's how the ongoing criminal organization called GoDaddy screwed me over my blog. (I'd actually vilify them but they'd just think it was a compliment, the way they operate with the small clients.)

(*Deep breath. Again.*)

Looking through the Duke site, I get the definite impression they don't have a lot of traffic from satisfied customers at their site. Notice the ABSENCE of any really new comments in their various forums.

Sure it's yours. Unless you want to change hosts. I got put on a waiting list to get my own site name back, but then they played more games to prevent me from getting it. A very long, ugly story relating to sneaky-ass stunts tied to ICANN rules. I sincerely do hope you won't have that problem. I soured on blogging because of tech issue like that.

Starting at 0600 today CPF would not load at all for 45 min. The last 15 min it would just hang.  This is the first I could get in.

Duke board was very slow in loading but would load.

Did this post and took 15 more min just to get back in.

I noticed that as well, I have a feeling they gave themselves priority, while the rest of us get a smaller pipeline.

We will be finding a better host.

I would say so.  I think they moved CPF up for about a week then move us back down.   I don't think they will last long if other are having the same problems.   Sooooooo do you wish the problem report or do we stop???

Hi,

Yes it is a problem with the server this site is being hosted on. Which is an Xeon CPU with 12 GB RAM in SoftLayar Dallas. The problem is the RAID array, which is going to be taken care of once we have a schedule setup with the datacenter.

I recommended that the domain be separate from hosting, we have nothing to do with this sites domain name, so that's all good. No, we did not give ourselves priority, because of the issues, some sites load faster than the others and the slow down usually happened in different times, hard to tell sometimes. If you contacted us using the ticket system, then this would have been resolved much earlier and would have come to the attention of a support specialist.

You are more than welcomed to move hosts, I won't blame you. I myself am not happy with what happened but it's technical stuff and if you know technology, sometimes it fails.

Thanks for the response DH, and thank you for the explanation.  We prefer to remain with Duke Hosting, as it sounds like you have identified the issue and plan to fix it.  Please give us an ETD...

Can you please give us a link to your ticketing system?

Also, for the forum, RAID is "Redundant Array of Inexpensive Discs".  It is a box with multiple hard drives, and as the RAID controller is writing to one drive, it is writing to the others part of the data.  So, when one drive goes down, you just pull out the bad drive and put a new one back in, and the RAID box starts re-populating the data to the new one.  But, any number of issues can be going on, like a bad controller, etc.

Thanks Duke, Mark is quite aware of our problem, so not quite sure what good a ticket would do, seeing how he has been looking into the matter.

Can you give us a time line as to the fix?
We do want to stay with Duke as Taxed said, but we do have our members to think of first.
Thanks Solar.

Hi,

The datacenter has said that they will replace the drives tomorrow at 9 AM. The ticket system is for 24/7 help, Mark does not have tech access and such. The tech guys who take care of the tickets are the ones who are on 24/7, usually responding to tickets in 30 minutes. They would have given you the reason and helped you resolve it .

The ticket system it accessible after you log into the CP at http://dukehosting.com/dukecp (http://dukehosting.com/dukecp)

If you are looking for new hosting providers, I recommend http://webhostingtalk.com (http://webhostingtalk.com) Some hosting providers have great offers going on, I would stay away from unlimited providers though, that's plain lie.

Best regards,

DH

I am having the site transfered out from that server to a newly deployed one, if everything goes alright, everything should be settled before tomorrow's 9 AM hardrive change, which may cause a little downtime but unlikely.
