Title: Coworker out for 10 months?
Post by: tracy9 on November 06, 2018, 02:47:31 PM
Our job consists of placing 75 or so drop ship orders a day, 200 emails,  tons of maintenance.  When someone is off their work has to be covered.  My coworker fell in the parking lot at work (this isn't her first work injury).  The company paid for her knee surgery and she was out 2 weeks.  Went on a 2 week vacation after that where she traveled.  Then did physical therapy where we had to cover her work work for 3 hours a day at least twice a week.  Then we are told the day of that she has to have another knee surgery since it wasn't healing...out again for 2 weeks....then more physical therapy which she said would be done by end of Oct.  But now she has back problems and there is more physical therapy.  This has been going on for almost a year and she hasn't been in the office once.  Only working from home.  She is a black woman.   Isn't this getting ridiculous.  Management doesn't give updates or ask if we need help or hire anyone.

I'm not sure how her being black has anything to do with it, first off. Second off, depending on the company and what types of benefits and health care she is entitled to, it may just be a really unfortunate turn of events for her. I am surprised that the place you work for has not yet hired someone to do temp work. Every place I've worked at has done the same when an employee is injured and may be out for an extended period of time longer than a month.

This has been going on for many many years.  Every excuse to call in or work home or leave early.  And yes being black does have to do with this at many companies.  They don't want to appear racist so she gets away with it.

I work evenings, and I get called out in the middle of the night. Some people work days and never get woken up, have crazy long days, and don't work on some of the extra stuff or projects. So, yes. there is a protected class, even if it is not fully based on race or gender.

From what I seen, people get injured/ill, go on extended leave, and never come back regardless if they are let go or quit.

Or they get big payouts not to not come back.  When they run out of money they get a new job and they start all over again looking for a big payout.
