Are You Addicted To Your Phone?
« on: March 07, 2019, 07:21:19 AM »
Just curious, because I heard a news story about people trying to cut back, if not give up their cell phones altogether.
Apparently it's a real thing. Me personally, I only use it to listen to radio because I can pull in a huge variety of stations as well a music, and that's it, oh, I even use it as a phone, though, less than 10 minutes per year.
For no other reason than I officially hate any phone. If I want to talk to someone, I drive over and say, "Hey, how you doing"?

Umm, I had a reason for asking this, but I'll be damned if I didn't forget.

Can you do without your cell? I can honestly say, if for not living so remote, I'd probably have been addicted, but since coverage is so hit and miss where I live, it never became an appendage.
I still have a hard line I will probably never give up.

I got a cell many years ago.  I used it when going out of town, that way the wife could always get ahold of me as needed.  About 10 min every 3 months.  Now I use it for when I go into town shopping once a week if I can get down the hill.      My kids and Doctors are the only ones that have my cell number.  I am up to about 15 min. per month for two cell phones.  I have one and the wife has one.  They run about 35$ a month.  There just flip phones just for phone calls.

We have a landline for my wife's pacemaker but I shut off the landline unless we need it.  We can get up to 10 junk call a day on it, so I keep it off unless we need it.

I had a smart phone and found it it frustrating and went back to a flip phone. That serves me well. Mrs. Sup has a smart phone and utilizes it more than I did. We eliminated our land line about three years ago. Went to our cable provider for internet. It is a local company with local CS folks. Saved about $100 a month by dropping AT&T and eliminated many solicitation calls.

Same here, but no one ha my cell # and I till get stupid calls. One was from some guy who was drunk trying to get back with his wife who dumped him because he was drunk, the other is from some woman who was certain my # was his hooker squeeze, she too was always drunk.
But like you, my land line gets nailed with "This is Microsoft, your computer is about to be shutdown unless you call us".  And a bunch of shit like that.
I's funny, the wife insisted I have a cell, but the problem is, I never remember to take it with me, and when I do, I forget to turn it on.

I'm glad I never got the bug of phone addiction, I love my peace and quiet, that's why I abandoned the city life.
Kids today have no idea just how freeing it is not to be connected 24/7. When I lived on the ranch we had a partyline shared by 3 other neighbors, the phone seldom rang because if was really important, people simply showed up, instead of bothering everyone on the line with incessant ringing.
Oh, and it was still a crank phone.

Times were so much simpler when you had a rotary dial mounted on the wall, people actually visited in person back then.

I get a phone call from the cell phone Co.  That I can save money now and upgrade my phone for 100 to 150$ a month.  I keep telling them call me back when you can save me on my 35$ phone bill a month.

I'd probably switch to a flip phone, but then I'd be more apt to carry it with me. The one I have is way too big to simply put in your pocket, I've cracked the shit out of the screen already from just sitting on it, so I tend to leave it by the puter.
To think, I used to pack a bag phone everywhere for business. That thing weighed about 6 lbs the size of a bible.

Retired three weeks ago, well actually on vacation for three more weeks then retired, and now use my smartphone like I used to use my answering machine, one quick glance when I come inside. I don't see the need to carry it around doing chores. I will probably go back to a land line as where we are moving to the reception is very poor. Might go back to a cell that you buy minutes for just for emergencies.

You're going to love the escape and peace when you do it.

I have one still too, but I'm too spoiled anymore. I have a bluetooth headset so I can at least hear the conversation without my hearing aids.
