Heard it will have an adverse impact on college level courses where students are expected to do research on written texts. Can just hear it now as the student tells the professor "sorry, I can't read cursive."

My son is a Architectural Engineering so he had to learn how to print clearly, starting out. But now it's all done on Autocad software.
They stopped teaching it for the same reason they stopped teaching phonics - too difficult for both the teacher and the student.
I have not so fond memories of nuns cracking my knuckles with a ruler when they taught me cursive. :ohmy:

Been using Visio from the first release, when It came on diskette and took 2 hrs to load.... still my favorite drawing program.
But... I always enjoyed a clean print, with sharp lines. Got to recognize a few draftsmen just by the way they marked up the "C" in a centerline, or made arrows open triangles, closed, some had the back line angled inward, some curved. "That's a Frank print, or a Leon, or Georgie did that one..." Some were annoying, "How long has this knucklehead been making his "C"s look like "G"s and half-hearts...?"
Beautiful, hand-drawn & graceful workmanship.... and they scaled the whole thing without a computer or graft paper - real artists!

Yep your right it like Morse Code keying. I have the first release of Visio also. :lol: I have it on an old stand alone computer. I enjoy it even today.

I may have ya beat... Since I busted my left-arm some time earlier, I had to learn to write with my right hand
and couldn't hold a pencil the 'correct' way. I had to stand at the blackboard and write: I HAVE BEEN HOLDING MY PENCIL THE WRONG WAY
100-times while the class was doing whatever in-session. Then I had to bring-in sheets of paper the next day, with
I WILL HOLD MY PENCIL THE CORRECT WAY 100-times while
holding the pencil the 'correct' way. She called my parents to make sure I was doing it right.

I've seen that. I couldn't make heads or tails of it. If they want to teach why 1 + 1 = 2 since they say this 10 step process teaches them that I have an easier way. Make a batch of cookies, take one cookie and another cookie, put them together and you have 2. All numbers are really are symbolic representations of quantity or amount. If one wants to teach fractions, then split the cookies or use jelly beans.

Guess I was lucky, no rulers rapping the knuckles, for me it was writing the same damn sentence over and over a thousand times until I did it right in cursive! LOL

That would work. My kids grasped the concept of money really early. They learned addition, subtraction and fractions and didn't even know they knew it. :biggrin:

Dori, why wouldn't schools do it this way if it would work. Why have all of this abstract jargon that in the end means nothing? To me, this whole ten step process to add a number is such a waste.

My older brother was a lefty, which I heard was akin to witchcraft, and the nuns converted him to a righty. I never could read his writing until the computer age. The nuns must have had a field with him in school. :laugh:

This was the 1950s when the first consolidated schools were formed and idiots could hide in plain sight, unquestioned. They have to do a long drawn out process, to arrive at 8 instead. First time I myself saw it, I thought this is crazy.
Now I know it's worse than just crazy. It's dangerous.
In fact it's even led to where our nation is at now. We are now a nation full of people, who use certain kinds of tech everyday.
And have no clue what to do if it breaks down, how it does what it does, or why it does what it does.
That's a dangerous path to send our nation and our kids down people, it really is.
We are raising an entire generation or two currently, who will not be able to think for themselves.
I don't know about you, but the thought that this is who will be running things in my golden years.

Our public schools have become monumental failures. I'd really like to see Trump dissolve the Federal Education Department and let local districts take over the jobs of education their kids as was done prior to the rise of the "progressives".
I realize this thread is a bit old but I cannot imagine not knowing cursive handwriting. I still carry small note pads and have one near the TV or PC when I want to check on something later. Our road trips would be even more lost without my scribbled notes and routes. Remember the blue copy books and essay tests in college, I often thought the poor prof must have fun reading some of those answers. lol
