Newtown! Not even a nod on this board--kids have no power, especially dead ones.

I went into the store yesterday and dropped about 50 bucks on various kinds of ammo. Unbeknownst to me it was the the anniversary of the Newtown massacre. I'm not a douche or anything. I wasn't trying to make a statement or anything like that. It's just that it was a rainy day, I had just gotten paid, and had nothing else to do and was planning on hitting the range next weekend. Anyway, the girl at the counter looked at me like I was crazy. Only after I got home and started surfing the net did I realize it was the anniversary of the shooting. I don't remember what day Columbine happened or the Virginia tech shooting for that matter.

So I am guessing it would be ok with her if it were the day before or after.      Why do they even  work at a place that sell ammo.

I'll bet you didn't know that your photo has screwed so badly with margins here that I am about to make a sign and picket the damn management here.  :ttoung:

If you're talking about my photo (you didn't say), sorry about that. Actually, it looks perfect on my monitor, but mine's a wide screen. I can't fix it now, it'll take one of those Magic Mods to get 'er done.

Separated points. I was speaking of the photo of the long rifle. Flintlock, musket, whatever it was/is. The margins auto-reset on Page 2 and after.

More importantly, the media narrative on this newest Colorado shooter was to deliberately obscure his self-styled communist beliefs, despite his many Facebook posts to that effect.

I quit newspaper work because reporters are edited from up above to tell a completely different story than what happened, to make political points through sheer volume of stories from one side. The Denver Post does this at the reporter level, self-censoring in order to get the story past the copy desk. I know two people who worked there, who confirmed this situation.

By "Newtown Effect," we assume you mean the predictable, perennial, mindless, knee-jerk rush to enact utterly useless and irrelevant new gun control laws (to add to the 22,000+ already on the books) in the wake of every high-profile gun crime.

Is that what you're calling the "Newtown Effect?"
Yep!  THE PREDICTIABLE, PERENNIAL, COMMON SENSE KNEE JERK REACTION to enact USEFUL and RELEVANT laws to KEEP controlling and abusive men, pissed off boys, AND THE MENTALLY ILL from having WEAPONS that can mow down 20 or 30 or people with MINDNUMBING ease.  We can't seem to FIX our RAGE isues so until we can, then PULL ALL THE FUCKING GUNS.  When the 'boys' can work and play well with others, they can have them back!!!!!!

We have laws that making and using bombs is illegal, and look how effective that's been.

We are still awaiting your answer to my question of what your definition is of REAL GUN LAWS is.

"PULL ALL THE FUCKING GUNS". How is your day going comrade?

Your OP specifically mentioned the Newtown shootings. Please enlighten us as to how any of the new gun laws proposed in the aftermath of that shooting might have prevented that shooting.

And, just out of curiosity, do you personally own any firearms?

Gun owners (like me) were sorry for the kids at Newtown however I have NO guilt for their death. I nor millions like me had anything to do with it. They were killed by a drugged up mentally ill young person...., not us. If you will recall it was a person shooting some school kids in Southern Australia that made the Australians fall for a knee-jerk reaction and give away their weapons. They regret it now. Same happened in other countries. I am going to be made fun of ,....but someone pulled the same here in the states with the killing of these kids. If you notice,....all of the latest mass killers were insane and drugged up. How easy would it be to "guide" them into doing some terrible deeds? WE did not fall for it. I think the deaths of these Newtown kids were the result of a UN, NWO, or Obama plan to take guns. It did not work.

yep!  THAT'S IT.  I want to see REAL GUN LAWS.  Now unless you want to KILL, filet and cook an animal using a high power ASSAULT weapon with the least amount of effort, WHY THE HELL do you need one??   To shoot kids in a school or commuters on a train or people in a theatre??

Because I have the God given right to own firearms and I choose too?

Who the hell are you to tell me otherwise?

Who are you, to tell me how I should and should not exercise my God given rights as a human being and citizen of these States United?

See that's what you libs don't get.

Our rights do not stem from government, they are not privileges, given to us by some governmental act or body.

They are rights, endowed to me as a human being by my creator.

It's precisely the arrogance, of sitting and telling someone else, particularly someone else who is not harming anyone else, how to exercise their God given rights.

That's what you libs choose to ignore, that is the element in this argument which you libs don't get.
One of every five Americans you meet has a mental illness of some sort. Many, many, of our veteran's suffer from mental illness like PTSD now also. Help if ya can. :) http://www.projectsemicolon.org/share-your-story.html

Here's my take on the Newtown (and other) massacres.

If all guns were made illegal right now, over the years I'm sure without a doubt they'd become less prevalent. It would take an extremely long time for this to occur given our populace's extensive rate of gun ownership, but over time you'd have less people owning firearms. Given this scenario, would Adam Lanza have been prevented from carrying out his crime of shooting all of those children that day if guns were incredibly hard to procure? Maybe. He may have used other means to carry out his plans, and that's precisely the point I'm trying to make. Regardless of whether or not Adam Lanza would've had access to firearms, the fact remains he would've still been a deranged pscyopath hell bent on killing people. The presence of easily obtainable firearms didn't cause him to become unstable. His killing of school children was predicated on the fact that he was very unstable to begin with, not because firearms were available.

In banning all guns, you wouldn't be curing society of mass-killings, or curing it of individuals losing their shit one day and snapping, you're only treating the symptoms of what appears to be a very ill society. It's like trying to cure cancer by prescribing pain killers and calling it a day. Banning guns might prevent some crimes, but if someone is crazy enough to kill children in the first place, I'm sure they'll find other ways of doing so.

One thing I've always been curious about is why seemingly normal people sometimes lose their minds and commit massacres. Ted K, VA Tech shooter, Columbine, any others... What causes people to snap? Is it loss of hope or something, lack of meaning in your everyday life? This is something I'd like to research. I've got some thoughts on this from reading over the years, but it's still something I'm curious about. Have mass killings like this always happened, or is it something unique to our modern era?

Even if guns didn't exist, man always finds a way to achieve his end goal.
Look at history prior to the invention of gunpowder, they still had fire and literally burned thousands alive in their homes.
Had the citizenry had access to guns at the time, the fight would have found it's equilibrium.

That's all a gun is, a great equalizer of force.
