QuoteAn investor group is planning for a doomsday scenario by building a $300 million luxury community replete with underground homes. There will also be air-lock blast doors designed for people worried about a dirty bomb or other disaster and off-grid energy and water production.

The development, called Trident Lakes, is northeast of Dallas.

It's not the mega-rich they're after, either.

Enough food, water and electricity for an entire year... 400 underground shelters connected by tunnels to house 1,600 people

QuoteResidents will enjoy an equestrian center, 18-hole golf course, polo fields, zip lines and gun ranges. Retail shops, restaurants and a row of helipads are also in the works. For those looking to "get away," they'll also be able to enjoy three white sand beaches and a neighborhood spa.

"We've evolved it into long-term sustainability instead of a survival community," Trident Lakes CEO Jim O'Connor told the Houston Chronicle, adding that the 400 planned condos will house about 1,600 people. "The concept is to build a community that will last two centuries or longer. That means we're looking at designs that include earth structures that won't be exposed to the elements."

Residents will first be able to move-in possibly as soon as 2018, O'Connor said, with construction slated to potentially begin next year.

The only thing really unique, IMO, is it's going BACK to long term, sustainability (plus some underground stuff, with plush above ground "playgrounds for adults")
The developers will make some major $ on this, and move on to another one.   ....leaving all the known design FLAWS for some smart contractor to work out.

That's the thing that gets me, tell EVERYONE where it is, and ...suuuure, you'll be really safe.

I'd rather live in a run-down-looking shack above ground, with a beautiful, massive, shelter below ground - and keep it quiet.

Yeah, we all know where it is, so if SHTF, who will be there to stop someone from commandeering the entire place for themselves and lock everyone out?
No thanks for several reasons, you can't pick your neighbors, and in a situation such as this, it only takes a couple of crazies to make life miserable for everyone, leaving them with one option, murder, and having to live with the fact you played a part in their demise.

Assuming they all go underground like gophers ... after a couple of weeks of no sunshine....

Practical Jokers looking for a few laughs start pulling pranks.

Tunnels connect it all together .... What could they possibly COOK and blow down those tunnel?  Pork n Beans with plenty of Onions?  Cabbage and Brats?

Annoying your neighbors, an expected game.

Yep, some like to party, get drunk and play loud music, while folks like me prefer coffee and quiet for reading.
I will have my gun, and peace will prevail.

If anything, this reminds me of the game Fallout, where govt habitats, much like this one were developed to sustain life, but in the end, not one of them went as planned, because others had differing agendas.
Great single player game by the way, if you're into games that take months to complete with differing outcomes.

Yeah, like travelling 18 months to Mars, nobody is expected to live - they'd probably kill each other before they got half way there.

My BIL asked us to help him start up a commune.   The wife and I would have to provide the start up money and have no say on how it was to be run.

  I jumped right on that.

It's like listening to a homeless guy give financial advice. There's a reason he's still broke.
Sadly some in my family refuse to take my advice, and instead, take the advice of someone older than I, who doesn't even own a pot to piss in, and a proven track record of failure.
Like you, I too have passed up these "for sure" deals, still stuck in a home I own outright with no bills whatsoever, while these people went onto lose everything they worked for.
Damn, missed another chance to change my financial status.

Wifey and I still laugh about when we were engaged, and my divorced and sisters with "marriage trouble" cornered her, "We want to tell you how to handle...  There's some things you need to know about him...  blah, blah, blah..."  Before they could get started, wifey WISELY cut them off, I like him just the way he is, thank you, and left them.

Now they admit... we have by far the best marriage in the family, that I just adore wifey and she's the sweetest (smartest and toughest) girl they ever met.   They mistook sweet politeness for rugged individualism and freedom loving.

I just think she's hot...   :woot:

LOL! Same here. Toy could tell you quite a story when she announced she was moving to the mountains to live.
SHTF, her daughters called her all kinds of names, disowned her, sisters and relatives demanded they meet me first and they'll decide if I'm worthy.
Yeah, the Hindenburg had a longer flight than that nonsense.

People just don't understand Conservatives, we have so much more incommon on a far deeper and unspoken level, something that libs will never grasp.

Yeah, it "leaked out" in a casual conversation we were going to "home school the kids"...

...well, we reminded all the detractors, if social services showed up at our door, we'd know exactly who called them.  LOL  They probably had 1000 reasons why it was such a bad idea, until...  our kids excelled in education, were better socially adjusted, and talked face-to-face with adults, without staring at the floor.

Another Underground Bunker system, made from an Atlas II missile silo.

http://www.kansas.com/news/local/article134892379.html
QuoteThose inside have surrounded themselves with walls up to 9 feet thick, ready to withstand a nuclear explosion, the eruption of Yellowstone's supervolcano or an outbreak of avian flu.

Larry Hall, project manager and owner of the Luxury Survival Condo Project, says he feels safer with the doors closed.

He says he's sold all 12 luxury condos in the former Atlas missile silo — which once housed a nuclear warhead — not far from Concordia, about two hours north of Wichita. He's working on a second silo.

A full-floor unit is 1,820 square feet and costs $3 million. A half-floor unit, at 900 square feet, costs $1.5 million.

Survival is a unifying cause. Hall said his owners come from a variety of political beliefs and include people in international business, architecture, law and medicine. He said the owners don't do interviews; efforts to reach them were unsuccessful.

Naturally....
QuoteA 2012 "doomsday preppers survey" by National Geographic found that 41 percent of Americans think preparing for a catastrophe, such as stocking up on resources or building a bomb shelter, is a smarter investment than saving for retirement.

"Some people are worried about solar flares taking out the power grid," Hall said. "Some are worried about a dirty bomb or a pandemic, but it doesn't matter what your threat scenario or ranking is, what matters is that this is a one-size-fits-all solution. ... Having a survival facility is certainly in vogue."

.... the crap they had to pull out of that silo probably qualifies it as a Super Fund disaster.  Still a neat idea.

We looked at them as a possibility, even found one in Kansas, I think, but what a mess.
Whoever had it probably had great plans to convert it and never did, rented out the Quonset hut above to a Harley repair shop/meth lab.
And superfund clean up would be a perfect description.
That was over a year ago, and I'd bet money it hasn't had even a nibble.

This may be it, though they don't seem to have pictures up, the other site I found had at least 20 pics.
This description sounds so much better than what it actually looks like.
