Trying to determine subjects of discussion.

Most people who frequent here seem to live on large tracts of land. Are there many suburbanites or city dwellers who prep in any way for disasters or natural events in this forum? I am just trying to find relevant subjects for discussion and interaction.

Good question.

Maybe these stats will help you refine your posts.

The breakdown is predominantly male, well off, retired, semi retired.
However, a target of 50 and under, apartment/suburbanites might be a good idea, considering they are the viewers, while an older membership are the active posters.
What I'm thinking, is target women and people in their 20s to 40s, since they are reading and not participating, and may be inclined to query ideas as where to start prepping.

These are the stats on our lookyloos in red.

I guess it depends on the disaster your contemplating.  I'm suburban, surrounded by dense populations.  There are no "open spaces" that are accessible, without traveling long distances by car, which might not be an option if the disaster is bad enough, like an earth quake.
The danger to America is not Barack Obama but the citizens capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency.

Thank you, Dori! The disaster not contemplated is the important one; one point of a bugout bag, if not a main point. Hikers have a universal standard of about ten items that are recommended to take on all hikes. Lately "Political Inepnest" has removed the knife from the list, but many still consider a knife common sense. You mention earthquakes, I live in a hurricane potential area. These are more probable scenarios then "End of The World", and it would be interesting and useful to learn which items you feel are essential in a 72 hour event . Another reason for the 72 hour limit, is weekend practice. 48 to 72 hours can be a good shakedown time for learned skills, home made equipment, testing if bugout bags actually are the right size for what you might need. There is more than one cat to be skinned here. Metaphorically speaking, of course. Thanks for the faith, Solar.

You raise an interesting point about geographical areas.
How much water one should consider as a bare minimum; eg. where I live, there are thousands of streams, so I can essentially pack light for water and increase food, while someone in the South may have to sacrifice space for water.

Maybe planning out a route prior to an emergency, where one knows sources of water exist might be as important as the bugout bag itself.
In the least, if you can't get to your bag, at least you'll know where you can get water.

A good place to start this could be building a suburban bug out bag, and also a good place to find out how many resources are in that kind of area. An earthquake, flood, snow or other natural disaster can trap you. You might also have very limited choices on if you might leave or get to your home. Dori, your post triggered me to think that an area might be unrecognizable after a major hit. I am adding a GPS code to point out my front door on a list of useful information in my bug out bag. I also have a map with canal routes along with standard compass headings.  Some other things to think about are to what extent you might feel you have to protect yourself from people whom might mistake you for a looter while you are traveling. In my bug out bag, I also have some "Save my butt" gear. Reflectors, whistles, signal devices of a few different types. I am experimenting with common epoxies and similar tubed chemicals to see if they work well as smoke signals. If anyone knows of something that stores well that can be used for that, let me know.

If there are any stone-quarries nearby, there'll be a powder-storage facility.

Airports that provide skydiving-training... or beekeeping-hobby places... or firefighting-training centers should carry smoke-accelerants.

Thanks, Kit! I will be checking into these places.
