As this elderly man didn't hesitate either, and he's alive to talk about it.

The shooting happened just after noon Friday on Faymeadow Avenue in North Columbus.  The homeowner says a stranger kicked in his door, but didn't get any farther than that.

A body lay under a white sheet, the result of a deadly confrontation in the doorway of a Faymeadow Avenue home.  The homeowner called 911, tells an operator, "Some guy broke into my house, and I shot him."

Neighbors say the homeowner is a 71-year-old retiree who lives there alone.

When police arrived, they found the suspect dead on the porch.  They say the door had visible evidence of someone forcing their way in.  They say the homeowner stopped him with a single shot.

"Somebody kicks in your door and they're coming in your house, you don't have to wait for them to come in your house," said Columbus Police Sergeant Rich Weiner. "There's a big difference if somebody's outside and they're 20, 30, 40 feet away and they're not inside your residence- different story. But somebody is kicking in your door and they're coming in, most people might consider that to be a threat and they can take action."

Most of us live under the comfort and protection of the law, or at least we think so. In the example cited, the law(police) weren't there to take care of him and he had to fall back on self reliance and the protections listed in the bill of rights under the constitutions.  Fully support his actions and applaud his removal of a drain on peaceful living.

Good for him. No one should rely on the police for protection. If you do, you'll be under the sheet not the perp.

When you're a few seconds from death, the cops are just a few minutes away.

too bad that this doesn't occur with all assaulters, robbers, and burglars. There wouldn't be any of them to breed more just like them.

If no one should rely on police for protection then why do we need them at all?   If we need them, then what is there purpose if it is not for protection?

Are there other functions that police have besides protection and should we not rely upon them for those functions as well?

Is what you say absolute?  What are the constraints for not relying on police and for relying upon?

Please, don't just say it's common sense.  Because, I really don't get it.

Don't delude yourself, the police cannot protect you, they are merely servants of the court.
You have a 2nd Amendment for a reason, but if you relinquish your fate to law enforcement, you deserve the outcome.
