Man I miss the old days when you could still buy real "strike anywhere" matches, now we have crap, and I do mean crap!
Bought a box of the green matches that made the same claim, but you waste far more than you actually use.
Does anyone know where to get some of the originals?

OK, rant off, this thread is more about emergency fire starters, from Bic lighters and char cloth, to scrape and pray.
What's you favorite?

I always have a flint-and-steel fire starter in the truck at all times.  I also like my propane torches for the BBQ.  lol.

Hmm.. I pick up so Diamond Strike Anywhere Matches with the white head, sometime this year.  It been so long I do not remember the place I got them.  But I will look around town and see if I can find them again.  It is the only ones my wife likes.

I also see them on ebay.

Gone are the days of the old 'lucifer' matches you could light with a flick of your thumbnail, the kind that would light themselves as they rubbed against one another in your pocket!  :tounge:

You're right about those new Diamond 'green' matches. They purely suck. I don't consider them to be 'strike anywhere' matches at all, no matter what the box claims. The stores around here don't carry the old style.

I've taken to keeping a few books of paper matches in a moisture-proof baggie in my coat pocket, as well as in the toolbox on the trailer. I remember when I never even had to buy matches -- every business you walked into gave them away. These days, since smoking in general is just not PC, even that is a thing of the past.

We should start a "Nostalgia" sub-board. We've got enough old farts around here to do a good job of it.  :tounge:

Hehehe... I treasure you, Mr. Tall, sir, because you're one of the few people on this board or any other I can refer to as "old man."

But in all seriousness, what would you think about a 'nostalgia' or 'good old days' sub-board? Just a thought. Plenty of potential input and source material.

BINGO! I used to light them when pulling them out of my pocket, nephew used to think I could do magic.
It's funny, I don't remember when they disappeared, because I think we were all distracted by the disposable Bic, that when we finally needed to buy a new box of strike anywhere, they were all gone.

Thank God for the govt for protecting us from ourselves.
