stock up on canned goods and bottled water

A former adviser to Gordon Brown has urged people to stock up on canned goods and bottled water as stock markets around the world slide.

Damian McBride appeared to suggest that the stock market dip could lead to civil disorder or other situations where it would be unreasonable for someone to leave the house.

"Advice on the looming crash, No.1: get hard cash in a safe place now; don't assume banks & cashpoints will be open, or bank cards will work," he tweeted.

"Crash advice No.2: do you have enough bottled water, tinned goods & other essentials at home to live a month indoors? If not, get shopping.

"Crash advice No.3: agree a rally point with your loved ones in case transport and communication gets cut off; somewhere you can all head to."

Mr McBride credited his former boss Gordon Brown with preventing a cataclysm by nationalising the banking system during the 2008 crash.

"We were close enough in 2008 (if the bank bailout hadn't worked)," he said. "and what's coming is on 20 times that scale".

Financial markets are unstable and periodically suffer crises which can have devastating consequences for the wider economy.

And there are 2 approaches to eating.  I'm conditioned to both.

Eat one meal per day, with a minor snack somewhere... or eat when you're hungry, with milk.  I usually add 1/8th if water to 7/8ths milk.

hhmm..... I heard somewhere that the only stocks "up" today were canned goods and bottled water companies.

I guess the investors know where to make a quick buck!!

We are not selling any securities. Will ride it out and then buy when it bottoms out.
In 1929 people were rich with $100.00 bucks in cash.
I can't figure out why the gov never closed the mkt? (its was criminal tampering with the mkts)
Usually they pull the pin at -300.

Good advice, you never know how long a weeks worth of food may have to last, eat as if it's going to be a month or more before you get more.

One should be thinking of a year for your stash.
If Yellowstone goes, it could be a year before the sun shines. (or longer)
We had that in Seattle, the sun never shined for a year.

Hmm... Now what year would that be.

And practice preparing gumbo and stew type meals.  The 'commercially-canned taste' will become nearly abhorrent after a month straight, if you don't experiment with ingredients a little.

Don't forget seeds.     and ammo        lots of ammo.   good reason to buy another gun or two      and maybe more ammo   Seriously, ammo will be priceless for barter, at least in the opening days should anything happen. It also helps to protect your other investments.

That's actually excellent advice, aside from making the most unpalatable road kill taste better, spices, sugar and salt will be worth more than that of gold in a barter. Can't eat gold.

Salt is so CHEAP, and would be worth a bundle in a long-term crisis.

I cannot understand WHY people with a nice back yard do not have a garden.  Yet, they'll buy silver and gold - and all their expensive groceries from the store instead of growing it (or teaching their kids learn how to garden by growing ... tomatoes!).
We learned a valuable lesson about gardens when I turned under some sod to plant one ...  it takes YEARS to get that soil worked up for productivity!  Under that grass lawn is about 1/2" of good soil, deeper than that is clay, rock and whatever fill dirt & debris that it took to level the area.

Another reason to plant a garden, Deer just love fresh veggies. :scared:  Why... they'll walk right up to your house! :woot:   you could invite one of them in, from time to time.

Bought a new 4th Generation Glock 19 this week and ordered ammo in volume.  Having fun target shooting at our new Gun Club...... beautiful air conditioned building with shops and restaurant.  Great place to hang out.

You sound like you have the same crappy soil I have to deal with.
And you make a great point. To those that think they can simply plant seeds in the event of an emergency without years of prep work are in for a huge shock, because not all plants adapt to the same Ph, while others require more nitrogen.

And yes, always plan on 30% of your crop for wildlife, or as you pointed out, BAIT!
