Title: So...if the economy completely collapses, are you prepared?
Post by: JustKari on September 16, 2012, 01:06:39 PM
I have to say, I am not as prepared as I would like to be.  The draught here this year destroyed our garden.  We do haves lot of potatoes, but little else made it, the deer got all of our corn, even with the fence.  I wanted a laying flock by now, at least that provides a little protein.  We don't have a barn for shelter of any larger livestock, we want to at some point, but the money for a shelter won't be there for a while, it depends on how well or how long we can hold off a full-scale economic collapse.

At least we will have the woodstove and will not have to rely on the grid for electric or gas to survive a winter.  Our biggest concern would be having enough food.

ST and I are pretty well off, but until I have at least two years of food and fuel to offset inflation, I won't feel safe, but that's just me, I don't want to have to resort to hunting, I hate deer meat, bear is too much work dressing out.
ST sells freeze dried food, tastes great and that's what we will be living on if we have to.

I consider myself extremely lucky, in that my entire life has led me to living independently from city life.
It's taken me more than twenty years to get to this point, if I had been lucky enough to have had children, I know I wouldn't have probably more than a few days of food around, kids eat a lot.

If I was just starting, I'd probably look into heirloom seeds, as much fuel as I could afford to store, and get a smoker and start saving beef and chicken for the long haul.

I don't think the economy will collapse, but I do think were in for some really tough times when inflation kicks in.

Kids eat a lot.   They sure do, I am not sure if Matt bought heirloom seeds, but he does buy the best we can, we get them from Stokes out of Canada.  The climate is really similar to ours, so we have really good luck with them, sometimes almost %100 germination, which we think is pretty fantastic.  The price is very reasonable as well.

Matt has wanted to build a smoker for years, and we have made jerkey in the oven before (duck and goose are my personal favorites).

We are not blessed with financial security, but we could be a lot worse off than we are, we just made some poor decisions during our non-parent years.  We learned about fiscal responsibility the hard way.  I don't begrudge or covet anyone elses success, I may be financially successful yet.  You just never know what the Lord has in store.

I am not worried about a collapse, I just like the idea of being prepared.  I am not building a bomb shelter, or anything like that.  By the end of the winter, we should have enough trees cut and split to last at least through one year and we have plenty more that need to come down.

Unfortunately we are pretty limited to what can be planted here, because of the elevation and soil type, (or lack of soil).
Were considering a greenhouse, that might be the answer to our problems.
Like you, I too made bad choices earlier in life, but they didn't seem bad a the time

But the only reason I got into selling solar, was one, I understood it, and two, I brought power to the mountain, and then the county wouldn't let me hook up till I paid a butt load of fees, so out of spite, I told them screw off and went solar, and it was the best move I could have ever made, except that it kept me broke for years trying to outfit my own home and tons of personal sacrifices because of it.
I literally lived as if I were in a depression with little money to eat on, only because I had a goal of finishing my house and having solar as my sole source of power.
That's why I say, if I had kids, life would be far different than it is.

This life isn't for everyone, I guess to some it would be considered barbaric, but for us, it is freedom to do as we please and aren't dependent upon govt, local or Fed for anything.
It's that freedom of threat of having services cutoff for not doing as they want us to which is freeing in itself.

So it's not as if I was trying to prepare for whats coming, I just got lucky in how the cards were dealt, which is why I have so much faith in God, he saw to it I was dealt all aces, when I thought it was all face cards at the time.

Preparing isnt easy by any means.  My gardens went to the drought also...pretty much burned up in the heat, so I am going to do an inside veg garden starting with basic stuff like salad and tomatoes,,, I have some rogue plants that are small now and will be transplanted into pots then  slowly brought indoors. cherry tomatoes and romas are best...radishes,strawberrys green beans cucs are this years experiment. Granted I tried a tomatoe once but I screwed up and didnt keep the soil warm enough. I also have a wood burner and will put the garden in the front window next to the stove. With a grow light for good measure....
Any kind of stock you can do is better then nothing at all.  Dried soups, drinks, canned meats like chicken,,,salmon,,tuna also works. Nuts, all kinds not salted. Honey, flours regular all purpose, wheat, cornmeal, oils- veg, canola ,olive. sugars all kinds, tea coffee,,, baking supplies, and if you can buy a half a cow,or a pig from a local farmer. Its cheaper and by all means you're helping a farmer not a corp.
My rule is one for the now and one for the later and one more for ya never know. I usually have 7 months stocked,,, but these days I have kicked it up a notch,, a big one.... just do what you can, when you can, starting with the important stuff first.  It is good to have a food saver. Those things are awesome....
There are people in our family that think I am nuts......There are people in  our family that will be looking to see if they can come on over.... Then there are those that think its stupid to begin with, lol, yep,,,,and I just look at em and smile...
Oh as far as seeds go,,,I let my stuff go to seed, at the end of season, and there's next years for that plant.... its garrunteed for that particular one.....
;)

Are you sure? It sticks in my head that some veggie plants won't reproduce from their own seed. (Kinda like you can't get new mules out of old mules -- it takes a donkey and a horse every time.) You might be right, and it's certainly not my line, but I can't get that article out of my head.

Heirlooms and organics will usually produce viable seeds, but they have to be taken care of and stored properly.  We haven't done it for the simple fact that Matt bought in enough bulk that he got two years worth out of one order, and interestingly enough, the yield was about the same as last year.  We really expected lower viability with carry-over seeds.  Not sure if those we bought would work or not, we'll just have to hope that when we make our March order that things ate still okay.

The foodsaver is fantastic, Matt got one for Christmas last year and we have used it a lot.  Before I was on total bedrest, I used to do extreme couponing, I would bring home a cartfull of "family pak" or bulk buy meat, we would portion it out and freeze it, saving tons of money.  Plus Matt is a hunter, so we will have duck, goose, pheasant, and deer to process and freeze.

I am nomadic and would be dependent on my gathering skills.  To supplement that, my contribution to the community would be transporting goods and information, and perimiter ranging.  For the most part I am self sufficient and used to being alone for long periods of time. I am proficient in a few primitive skills that will help with the overall well being of the community.

Hey, Walks! I have taken several courses, not all from the same school. Some of the training for skills was from family and friends while growing up, and I learned a few from older people who traded teaching me some "old " ways. Because of my current lifestyle, skills of hunting and fishing are not as widely practiced as I would like, but I do try to keep practicing other basic skills. One thing that I am finding is that being in shape is equally important, and along with that being in good health. Getting older does not mean you have to be out of shape, and that sneaked up on me. I am rectifying that though. I activly seek out people who share lessons in the outdoors and bushcraft, and since work takes me over a wide range of places, there are many opportunities to learn and share.  I am no expert, not by a long shot. Mostly I am just a person interested in how people get by and along within tough circumstances.

Solar, worry not. The " hanging food" keeps me fed without having me track through the kitchen and without foraging in the refrigerator. A sausage hung from the bottom of the raised porch keeps it away from the dogs and critters. I just hack off a chunk and all is good to go for a while.

I think it needs to be said that if the economy completely collapses -- no one is completely prepared - unless they are 110 and lived in Germany during the German collapse of 1923-1924.  Emotionally, I am not sure if I am ready even though I have believed we were headed toward collapse for the past twenty years.  My guess, is that as none of us have gone through anything like this -- we will surprised how it will effect some folks - and how quickly folks will turn to Big Brother for help.  My opinion is that we need to do our small part in creating a viable alternative to economic slavery for our neighbors.

Yes I have food for a year and yes I have what I need to protect that food (if needed).  I think it is worth studying, however, what happened in Germany AFTER their implosion -- Hitler was able to make his arguments for Socialism (on a national scale).  He was also able to direct national frustration on a easy scapegoat - the Jews.

My husband pointed something out that I had not considered.  I had wanted to consider a windmill, but hubs pointed out that in a collapse, nothing points out that you still have electricity, and possibly food, like a giant windmill.

If you live in an area that has good wind more than 50% of the year, it's always a good investment.
If you decide to go that route, feel free to ask questions, it's part of my expertise in the alternative energy field.

You mean I am not windy enough?  :scared:

In all seriousness, here in MN wind is a much better option than solar would be.  The daunting aspect is, of course, the up front cost.

True, but far less costly than solar and far more efficient, due to the fact wind can blow 24 hrs a day.

Right now, you can pick up wind turbines pretty cheap due to a depressed mkt.

Sandy has really opened my eyes on the necessity of being prepared. Sandy was a relatively small natural disaster, but the effects were and still are devastating here in the NY area. Electricity went out, people didn't have food, stores ran out of food so you couldn't just go out and stock up on short notice, gas stations had lines that were dozens upon dozens of cars long. People got desperate very fast and began to turn on each other; I read a news story about a man who pulled a gun out on people at the gas station to secure a position at the front end of the line. Now stuff like this makes me wonder what is in store when things really get bad on a larger scale.

So when it comes to the prospect of the economy completely collapsing, it's clear that there are going to be necessary preparations that I need to make. I've been looking up prices for an adequate generator to power necessary equipment in the event of long term power outages. I'll need to stock up on batteries and things that run on batteries, I was fumbling throughout my house looking for a flashlight in the dark in the aftermath of Sandy. Theres also useful hand crank and solar powered radios and such that can come in handy.

This all takes for granted the fact that I'll need to stock up on food to last X amount of time at least

lol, we'd expect nothing less from Travis Bickle.

Though staying put requires some planning for water, heat, hardening the windows / doors, hunting or fishing or foraging after (really "during" is best) the pantry's waning.

Much of this is very low tech and common sense.  Anybody can set up their rain gutters to flow into some kind of containers.  A pool or other approach to a cistern-like device.  A quality camping water filter in case you need to go to bodies of water or puddles.  Small wood stove or propane / kerosene heater.

I had a fun mental exercise matching up the refrigerators, washer-dryer, dishwasher, stove, heavy furniture, sofas / shelving, cabinetry, etc......and the various exterior openings of the house.

Gathering wood for burning or hardening can be helped greatly by disassembling fences and decks and securing the wood inside.  Taking decks down probably makes breaking in to your house a lot more difficult, too.

Food gathering outdoors is probably the toughest.  You really need to have some knowledge and experience, and the right equipment for fishing / hunting.  Foraging edible plants and trapping is a little simpler, but it does take some research and knowledge.

Don't forget to know where you'll be relieving yourself, and how you'll take care of your other sanitary / health / dental conditions.  These are seldom thought of, but frequently bigger than the rest.

Hi, decided to stop being a ghost on this forum and start participate in this discussion as I'm very interested in it.

It's very hard to emmigrate to Japan, I have a uncle there and only reason he was accepted is because he is a millionare and married a japanese woman. Germany would be Schengen which is not that hard for an american, but still its a process and if the US economy collapses i'm sure EU will put up emmigration block on the US, we don't want any more westerners, only muslims allowed  So I think Latin America would be better option for americans seeking to escape.

In the end though I don't think it will matter with CELAC Communist Union in Latin america and the EU transformation into Communist system. We will all be oppressed.

I have two options if the system become totalitarian and the EU economy collapses, one is a house on an island connected by undersea tunnel. Living near the ocean will allow for deep sea fishing making yourself self suffiecient in that respect, this could also be traded with inlands survivalists for other food types. Then again the terrain on the island is very open and rocky, impossible to flee if the situation calls for it.

The other option is a house in the mountain, my family are not exactly survivalists so I'm saving money to buy the property from them and turn it into a self sufficient resident area. Sort of like what "Solar" and others on this forum have done except not as pro. The mountain house I have is near to a small stream and a large river so I think hydro is the way to go for me. Also the mountains have allot of deer, moose and grouse.

The problem for me though is aquiring guns and ammo. I have a hunting licence and thinking of buying hunting rifles and shotguns. Handguns are pretty much illegal, but you can aquire them for sport reasons, but the barrel must be kept at the shooting range. And in any case the EU is sure to pass total gun abolition laws when they turn communist, so being registered as a potential terrorist for owning huntin rifle will would be more a threat than the short term advantage of owning a legal firearm.

What I'm considering though is buying a 3D printer and manufacture handguns without getting registered in a database. Anyone got any advice or know anything about manufacturing your own guns? The other option for me is getting it illegal which I don't want to do.

Welcome MS, I love the idea of an island connected to a deep sea cave, though the rough terrain might be an issue at my age.
I don't know anything about 3D printers, if it were me, I'd ask around machine shops about weapons makers, you may find a nice hand made AR style weapon.
Then you still have the issue with ammo, attaining primers and shells might be a challenge. I'm betting there's an underground mkt dealing in just what you're looking for, every country in the world has a black mkt that can get anything you desire.

Thanks, yeah I think I will just buy 2-3 rifles and ammo legally, then if it the state ever decides to outlaw these guns I'm sure the blackmarket will flourish, and then I can take advantage of it. If the US ever becomes a constitutional republic again I will emmigrate to the US though.
