Snow.. southern style

It doesn't snow often along the Virginia / No. Carolina line, but when it does, interesting entertainment results.

Aside from the folks that can barely drive on dry roads, snow and that evil "black ice" bring out the stories of near mail-box misses, skidding into Ballards at Hardees and school buses sliding off mountain roads (which actually IS serious), winter in the south of the Mason-Dixon line ain't like anywhere else.

Prepared for the worst, Hurricanes and 2" snowfalls that close down everything, here on the homestead, where the pantry is full of beans.  The fresh meat, milk & eggs wanders around in the fields of fresh falling snow - we've learned to be observant and enjoy the more humorous side of living-off-the-land...

Weekends, the farmer's husband makes the meals, giving Darling Wifey a break.  With breakfast just about established,  - it involves tree sap, - the farmer & kids wander back into the house, bringing the animal / bird reports.   Ducks march in a line, easy to count, Chickens, meh, we heard something crow.   All is well .... except for a Narragansett Turkey Hen, who has just realized something is different, there's white stuff falling out of the sky, it's everywhere... on the ground (looking down, studying it carefully...), on the fence (craning her neck over and under the mesh fence, carefully examining it...).  She cocks her head upward, flakes gently falling, shaking the occasional direct hit away, following one of them to the ground, repeating several times, unsure what this white stuff is.[/i]

Examining snow for the first time, in the world of Turkeys, it can't be complete, without trying-it-out, the taste test.   These are free ranging birds, like the Ducks, Chickens & Quail they love to hunt for slow moving bugs in the morning, catch flies, dig through cow patties for larve, and crap all over the front porch, the swing, chair, BBQ grill, wood pile...   which the Doberman pups have grown a real liking for!  Farmer Wifey says, "we have crazy animals out there, will eating them effect us like GMO, BGH & Alar..?" Don't forget mad-cow and cronic-wasting (deer).   Of course, this turkey hen is going to taste test snow, it's moving!  Must be good to eat, because it moves!   She looks, pecks, shakes her head violently, watches another one falling, snatches it, shakes her head rapidly - after a few minutes, she quits...  and forgets, repeating the taste testing & head shaking, again.  If it wasn't for egg production, she'd be the guest-of-honor some evening...  we can wait though.   Looking out the window .... she's settled down, digging through the thin veil of snow cover, for her daily diet of clover.   Strutting slowly across the yard, as if inspecting the new covering, I think she's realized, "it's not food".

Winter and Ducks ... gotta love it.

Unfortunately those same people cause so many accidents here in CO with every snow fall. They think they are invincible in their big SUV's, until it comes time to stop then they discover that they have become and uncontrollable source of destruction on the highway. Black ice is a way of life here in CO, something the uneducated learn first hand in the winter.

We're in the middle of this snowstorm, It's been waxing an waning for 6 hours, light snow to blinding blizzard.
We made a "Round Barn" out of some panels, and a 11' satellite dish, it's about 7' inside, and we covered  3/4 of the sides it with a cheap plastic tarp, added a swinging door that goes all the way to the ground.  Also has roosting poles - they love it - completely out of the wind, plenty of food and water, nice and dry.

Last night, we managed to get 2 Turkey hens inside, but the Tom was insistent, so we left him outside.   This morning, he was trying to get out of the snow, and inside.  LOL  6" on the ground, and still 12hrs left for us.  Glad we get to work-from-home today.

Ducks have an elevated house, with a ramp, we added a bunch of hay for them to bed down, making those content quacking sounds.

Life on the farmette, I love it.... still got power, that's a good thing.

I'll stick with an Arctic Cat or a Ski-Doo, thank you, they can go many more places than a "car on tracks", and a hell-of-a-lot faster, for less money.
