Many people have disaster kits set up for their families, but don't take into account the needs of pets too. Fido and Fluffy need food and water, a place to sleep, and a way to transport them. Copies of medical records, innoculation records, medication, toys, an extra collar and leash and a few days of food and water can be stored in an animal crate. It is a good idea to crate train your pet so in the event of an emergency it does not add to the animals discomfort or confusion if it must be kept in one for any reason. Tags are available that can be stamped with emergency info, make sure your spare collar has them as well as their regular collar.

Does anyone have more ideas for making sure pets are taken care of?

Thats a really good point about food.
I always carried food in the car for my dogs, just in the event we were stuck for awhile.

Well the worst happened, I was stranded in the snow for a day and night, and strangely enough, my idiot girlfirend at the time, (20+ years ago) thought the food was old and threw it out, but left the dog food, well the three of us subsisted on dog food for 36 hours, and it wasn't all that bad, (IAMS dog food)
And the milk-bone biscuits weren't all that bad of a snack.

Point is, we generally buy about 6 months or more supply of dog food when we buy it, it keeps rather well, and could possibly save all of the family members lives.

Stay away from Purina crap dog food or the cheaper foods, they are mostly corn.
