This is the future leftists see for the US. Canadians have till 2018 to comply.

Dec. 22 is the deadline for Montreal residents to register all fireplaces or wood-burning stoves (or anything that burns solid matter, as opposed to fuel or electric). It’s part of a plan adopted by the city of Montreal to implement stricter air-pollution regulations by 2018. Dorval recently adopted similar measures.

Montreal sent out 47,000 letters to residents it suspects has the appliances, based on records of municipal home evaluations. As of late November, the city had compiled 23,000 online responses.

The penalty for residents who have not registered wood-burning fireplaces or stoves is a fine of up to $500.

Starting in 2018, wood-burning appliances will be banned unless they meet the rigorous new emission standards of 2.5 grams of fine particles or less per hour. The bylaw is among the strictest in North America, said Réal Ménard, the city’s executive committee responsible for the environment. Presently, transforming a stove or fireplace with inserts so that it is in compliance with the coming regulations costs between $2,000 and $8,000.

Also part of the new bylaw:

• No wood-burning appliances can be operated on smog days, when air pollution rates are considered dangerously high.

• During power outages lasting longer than three hours, even non-compliant wood-burning devices may be used.

Green energy my ass!

Tens of thousands of years man has been relying on fire as a heat source, suddenly govt discovers fire is so dangerous that we must use the power provided by government controlled entities instead of self sufficient individualism.
Yet somehow vehicle and industrial emissions, bio generation are not worth eliminating. That's far more complicated than inspecting people's private homes to enforce a law everyone knows to be a Marxist scam?

Gee.... why not circulate a petition to ban forest fires and threaten to fine God for lightning strikes?

Still in the design stage of my own wood/coal/oil burner - which would never pass with these folks.  It doesn't matter if you're a licensed Stationary Engineer, fully understand how to get a clean burn and efficiency, but, because it's a home brew, they'll automatically say you can't use it.   (expecting something like that, sooner or later).

About a mile from me, a 90yr old black man has been heating his $20k house with wood for over 70 years.  That's assessed value, $20k.
Surrounding him, every farmer except ME and my closest neighbor, burn wood for heat - a couple with propane for backup heat.

If they ever pass a law like that in rural Virginia, they'll be such an outrage from us poor folks - lawsuits following shortly afterwards.
The local saw mills pile the cut-offs, "free wood" - and everyone burns this green wood by the pickup truck load... it's tough enough to afford the gas to go get the stuff!  Passing laws to shut down wood burning, is akin to charging for breathing.
