Make Your Own Fire Piston

I was searching for strike anywhere matches, when I saw a reference to fire piston.
As a kid my grand dad had one of these, and to a 7 year old, it was pure magic.
Of course, I had to share with all of you and a way to make your own, and this site does a great job of explaining the process.
Or you could buy one of several available on the mkt ranging from under $20.0 to $100.0 depending on your requirements.

For those not familiar with the product, it uses compressed air via a hand strike against a solid surface by heating the internal air. Basically friction heated air, using a myriad of materials such as straw, milkweed bloom, fire cloth made out of cotton rags/T shirt material etc.
And yes, it's as easy as striking a match, only more reliable when considering the shitty matches you get today.

Never heard of it before, thanks for posting it.

.... thinking of some way to use something like it (compressing air = heat), minus the burn cup and copper...
It would be neat to just set it in a pile of tinder, compress and go, without the tinder cup & wooden dowel.

I bet it could be done with a vasoline soaked cotton ball.

That's what is nice about inventions, people can always improve on them.

My BIL tells me his wife is so full of hot air that one day she will start a fire.  But I have yet to see that happen.

Stay away from me then, after a good night of BBQ and beverage, I got so much gas the dogs slink out-of-the-room with their tails between their legs.

I was thinking of a dual chamber, with a valve between them.   The second chamber has an external "U" shaped extension, so pump up the second chamber, it gets hot, igniting the material in the (copper) "U" loop on the end.  Ideally, you'd insulate the thing, so the heat would escape off the end where the burn materials are.  The advantage, as soon as you have something smouldering, just blow on it a little...   or let the hot air escape out of the secondary (smaller chamber) to aid in getting it going.

Just brain-storming about some way to not have to remove the plunger, but generate more heat.
