Many children get frustrated by not being able "to do it" and it frustrates the adult teacher as well. Machines like bow drills, lathes, digging sticks, and even some traps are more efficient if sized to the user. this applies to large adults teaching small adults as well. When you learn a skill, relate the size of the tool to the length and or width of body parts. It makes it easier to remember, and the scale will match the size of the person making and using the tool.
The same principal works well for shelters, too. If you measure insulation debris from your fingertips to you armpit, your student may have to add his or her body width as well for the same protection.
