This was a very interesting read.  Some of this Solar and I already do/have.

Something I have overlooked, the head led lamps.  That is a must have.

I have several, every time they come out with a new one, I can't resist it.
Its a guy thing ST tells me.
Don't ask me why, but I love a super bright flashlight.
If you buy one, look for one with an additional red LED, it is great for reading in the forest, you don't lose your night vision when you look at it.

I bought this flashlight last year and it is as bright as the high beams on the Subaru.
I can shine it on the mountain across the canyon a mile away and you can light up the trees.
