First aid kits

Sick Of Silence

Need help with first aid kits. I recently bought a couple to replace the one in my car and the one in my bathroom. The old ones are about 14 years old and never been touched. The one in the car has gone through hot and cold of being in a car. The other one just sat in the unused bathroom medicine cabinet.

Any guess if the supplies are any good? I assume the Band-Aids/tape is no good, the Neosporin is bad, and the bandages are probable falling apart. But, I want to combine them and replenish for a third kit.
With all these lawyers with cameras on the street i'm shocked we have so much crime in the world.

Hmm...  I have Band-Aids/tape that over 35 years old and they work.  If you make a good first aid kit it will last a long time.  The bandages that are not open are not falling apart.  Open your first aid kit's and check them out, and see what new you need.  Neosporin I do get new every years, even if it has not been opened.  At my age I also use Dragon for joint pain.  As my arthritis flares up now and then in the Winter.  I don't like pill, so this works for me.  I also have CPR Mask's in each first aid kit.  I also have training in the use of a defibrillator and I keep that training updated.

Original ones are from Lab Safety Supply since they were kept from a prior job. New ones are cheap ones from Wal-Mart.

I will investigate, replace, and upgrade as needed. Thinking in investing in an organizer. The one in the car has been in some type of vehicle for years. I sometimes forget I have them. Just keeping the basics in them.

Is there a website that discusses first aid kits (building, maintenance, philosophy, etc.)? I asked here because I assumed someone here is a prepper or knows one.

Myself I would go down to my nearby fire department that have Paramedic or  EMT.  As thing have  changed over the last 89+ years.  Also update your first aid card or take a class.

Since the old first aid kit container fit in a certain spot in the vehicle, I swapped the supplies and placed things from their packaging into Ziploc bags so everything can fit.

The old kits are at least 19-20 years old. I immediately disposed of those 16 year old past the expiration date Aspirin/Ibuprofen pills. Those wet naps/alcohol wipes I considered dried up so they will get thrown away. I probably at the least will take the Band-Aids and put them in the work vehicle. Maybe include some gauze and bandaging. I have some alcohol pads that still should be good.

I just discovered I had two more of those old kits. Four kits in total.

  That's OK I have one in all of my equipment I have.  It's like a gun, don't leave home without it.

I forgot about the two I had (out of site/out of mind). I totally forgot about the other two (hidden away). Consolidated stuff to make it improved.

My son is an EMT.  He had a lot of good advice, what to stock, why and what to look for.
We got stuff in there I'll probably never use, or would be afraid to use, but, if he was around, I'd feel a bit more comforted he had everything necessary.

We also built ours up as a "1st aid/survival bag".  Many things have multi-use, and considerable "overlap" of things likely to fail.   Additional items are space blankets, allergy meds, knives, a shovel, light rope, emergency camping stuff.  Each vehicle has one, just-in-case.  We built them up from scratch, which cost more, but... the bandaids STICK & don't fall off when wet.
All animals are created equal; Some just take longer to cook.   Survival is keeping an eye on those around you...

I have bought two first-aid kits from Wal-Mart. I put one in my personal car and I consolidated two of the old kits (mainly gauze, bandaging, and Band-Aids) for the work vehicle. I have the other new kit at home as well as the other two consolidated old kits.

Now, many of us are not EMTs, but what is recommended to have on hand?

Some sort of antihistamine/inhaler, some kind of pain med, including aspirin which has properties for blood thinning, heart issues, Kotex makes a great bandage as well, that new super glue for serious cuts, a bit pricey though..
That's the problem with first aid kits, you need two, because one will have the very basics for cuts, slings, mild burns etc, but the other has everything you hope you never need.
Also, get a good first aid book, study it and keep it with the other kit, the one for critical care.
I could list stuff you hope you never need, but then, you'd need a big ass box to carry it all in.

Best thing? A phone, cal for help..

I wanted information from the EMT. But, I just want something practical to wrap up a wound. I am not trying to perform surgery.

Well you got it anyway, didn't ya?

Like I said, Kotex is an amazing product. We used it in the army decades ago, it keeps blood from running and attracting bugs.
But seriously, look into Derma bond, super glue was first used in Nam, but they've made major improvements since.
