I think this is a good idea for sharing and knowing........  It would be useful in a full blown situation.
What do you think?

I agree, I was going to post on the subject, but the problem is that the plants in my area, don't even exist 10 miles away, so it would have been good for those that live in my area, but not your's. :(

Roots are a good source, but you have to know when and what is safe depending on the Season.

But this leads into keeping plants in the house that can be transplanted later if need be.

Solar, which area do you live in? Not so much for the plants you have in your area, but you might think about introducing native plants that could be usefull to you.  I introduce some plants to fields nearby that are usefull in some way, or transplant some  from nearby areas to increase the number that are already there. I don't use exotic species.  Which trees are in your area?

I live in the Sierra Nevada mountains, not far from lake Tahoe.
The trees are all huge conifers which make the ground very acidic and choke out the Sunlight, not to mention it is just clay and shale up here.
Were to high for fruit trees other than apples, we need to build a greenhouse, but don't tell ST, she doesn't need the bug planted quite yet. ;)

Perhaps someone will discover this post?

One of the easiest accessible safe to eat and delicious leaves is GRAPE IVY.
In fact you may have already eaten it and didn't know it.

If you go to a Greek or Mideast, Assyrian restaurant they will have it on the menu.

It's frequently called DOLMA

It is cooked grape leaves that have been filled with meat and rice. It is DELISCIOUS.

I have a grape ivy website at the end that describes the leaf, shows pictures of it and shows how it looks when cooked.

The leaves are collected. The young leaves or those growing in the shade some are best. In the fall the leaves get large and rough. They are tender when the leaf feels somewhat supple. You will need to collect about two shopping bags or four plastic bags stuffed with the leaves. Try not to break them.
Then checked for bugs or bad spots pinching off the stem at the beginning of the leaf. You shouldn't need to wash them bit it won't hurt if your going to use the leaves immediately.

Have the cleaned leaves handy

How to make DOLMA

A pot of water is heated until boiling. Get a frying pan spatula handy. Then a stack of leaves 20 or more is laid the on top of the spatula using your finger to hold them in place Holding the top of the leaves  with your finger and the spatula - gently lower the leaves into the boiling water for about 3 - 4 seconds. Don't remove the spatuala.  Then lift the leaves out with the spatula, hold for a few seconds to let the water run off and set aside.

Take extra lean  ground beef and put it in a large mixing  bowl. Mix about a cup of rice to 4 cups of meat. Add whatever spices you like, garlic, few dashes pepper, salt, ground hot if you like hot, tomato paste, finally chopped onion, 1-2 tablespoon olive oil and mix all together. When you finish mixing it should be dry enough to roll in a ball so don't put too much tomato paste or Olive oil in. .

Have a large pot on the side
Then lay out a scalded leaf in front of you and put a heaping  teaspoon of the mix in the center of the leaf and fold the leaf ends to cover all the meat. Only put enough meat mix in to be able to wrap up the meat.

When you finish it makes a little folded up stuffed container about an 1 ½ x 1. Like a short fat cigar. Then  lay it in the bottom of the pot. Continue until you use all the meat. Stack them to cover the bottom, but don't wedge tight them against each other. Make another layer with more stuffed leaves. Stack all the stuffed leaves in the pot. Once done cover with water to about a 1/4 - 1/2". Put on a tight fitting cover and bring to a near boil, then turn the heat down to simmer for  about 30 + minutes. All or most of the water will be absorbed by the rice.

Carefully remove them and serve

Depending on how much you make have a pot that will hold all of it once it is put in the leaves.

You can find it growing almost anywhere along the edges of woods, in yards where it send runners up into bushes. There is no other vine that looks the same.

The Internet is not the best for determining what is safe to eat.

For those who doubt me check out the below article in Wickipedia.

The article has pictures of how it looks when prepared.
