Interesting stuff...  at least people are thinking about it, that's a start.

I knew the director sounded familiar.

Democrat solution = nationalize the electrical grid, put it under government control.
Republican solution = do what they say... we're also in it for the money.
Capitalist solution = decentralize the grid, local cooperatives, instead of ONE target, turn it into thousands of tiny entities, easily maintained and managed locally.

Really, man, every solution for Electrical power/grid is based on keeping the major cites lit- and it's always a government solution, like they *own* the transmission lines.  Same goes for the pipelines, which are also not government owned, but somehow have managed to survive just fine since 1950.

That's hard to imagine - I was standing on pipes buried in 1949-1951, a big corn field planted right over the top of it all, were it not for a tiny little metering station, just a handful of green pipes, you'd never know there were 4 huge gas lines under your feet.  The technology they use to inspect and maintain those pipes is mind-boggling...

If anyone wants to see what happens to infrastructure when the government takes over, just look to the Socialist Countries in South America - take away the profit motive and it completely falls apart, and prices skyrocket!

Now for the useful stuff.   I for one, am not going to store an expensive HAM radio in a series of garbage cans, buried 3' into the earth, expecting an EMP to wipe out everyone else.   If the military (or, eh... other HAMs who market to the military), have already figured out how to "harden" sensitive radio gear, why shouldn't I do the same???

Low-Frequency Protection Concepts for the Electric Power Grid: Geomagnetically Induced Current (GIC) and E3 HEMP Mitigation

QuoteThis report deals with techniques for protecting the high voltage portion of the U.S.
power grid against the effects of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) resulting from
geomagnetic storms and the late time E3 portion of high altitude electromagnetic pulse
(HEMP), which is also known as MHD EMP. The basic concepts of operational
modifications, blocking DC series capacitors in the lines and series resistors in the
transformer neutral ground connection of wye windings and autotransformers, are
introduced in Section 1, and explored in more detail in Section 2.

Section 3 examines the existing systems that have introduced series capacitors in a
substantial fraction of the system, specifically the Hydro Quebec system from the mid
1990s and the WECC region in the western U.S. It is seen that series capacitors on some
lines reduces the GIC currents and production of reactive power, but not by a great
amount. Section 4 briefly performs a generic evaluation of the effect of neutral blocking
resistors as a function of line length.

Section 5 extends this to an examination of the effects of neutral blocking resistors on the
high voltage portion of the whole U.S. power grid, using a constant geo-electric field.
Section 6 continues the evaluation examining the effects of placing resistors in only the
highest voltage transformers (which contribute a disproportionately high fraction of the
reactive power), or only on some fraction of transformers with the highest GICs.
Sections 7 and 8 deal with the performance of the U.S. power grid modified with neutral
blocking resistors in selected geomagnetic storm scenarios and E3 HEMP scenarios,
respectively.

Section 9 deals with the system tradeoffs that result from the introduction of the neutral
blocking resistors, including IEEE standards, restrictions due to existing insulation
limitations and expected modifications in relay settings.

You have the link above, it's technical, but educational... this is one way it's done.
I have little doubt, living in Virginia, a HEMP (High-altitude Electromagnetic Pulse), and our power grid is down, per this report.

High-Frequency Protection Concepts for the Electric Power Grid

William Radasky
Edward Savage

Metatech Corporation
358 S. Fairview Ave., Suite E
Goleta, CA 93117

QuoteThis report is intended to provide a set of high-frequency (> 1 MHz) electromagnetic
(EM) protection concepts for the U.S. power grid. The EM threats of interest are for the
early-time (E1) high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) produced from a nuclear
detonation at high altitudes, and intentional electromagnetic interference (IEMI) from
EM weapons. While these threats are low probability, they are likely to have a high
impact unless some effort is made to protect against them.

This report begins in Section 1 with an introduction. Section 2 summarizes recent reports
with respect to the E1 HEMP threat and its impacts on the power delivery system.
Section 3 summarizes recent reports with respect to the IEMI threat and its impacts on
the power delivery system. Section 4 identifies the protection needs for both HEMP and
IEMI and Section 5 identifies a set of protection plans for each of the identified threats
and power system aspects. A bibliography is provided at the end of the report.

This is the easiest to understand, it's got good charts, and seems to be written for the layperson.
Quote2.1 E1 HEMP Environment

E1 HEMP is the first part of the intense electromagnetic signal that is generated by a
nuclear burst that explodes high above the Earth – generally said to be "above the
atmosphere" or in space. In order to generate a significant field, the usual altitude
definition for the HEMP burst is 30 km or higher, although this definition is not precise.

E1 HEMP is a fast narrow pulse, typically possessing high peak electromagnetic field
levels not commonly seen from natural events. Figure 2-1 shows a generic waveform for
a full HEMP signal – E1 HEMP is the "prompt gamma signal" part that lasts out to about
a microsecond. The rest of the signal is much lower in magnitude, but also much longer
in time extent. More details concerning the phenomenology of creating E1 HEMP can be
found in the bibliography.

In encourage everyone to at least look at this section, if someone knows how to post the graphs/charts out of the document into this thread, please do - quite informative.
Even mentions Lightning in the comparison.

I always find these discussions about the govt being involved in dictating rules governing the grid, as the Marxist Dims forced the country into using the ironically named "Smart Meter", a chip based unit, over its analog older brother.
I'd suggest anyone that has one of these govt spy units installed on their home, to cut a couple of heavy solid copper buss bars to replace that piece of shit till the utility gives you a solid d ate when a new meter will be installed in the coming season.

We took a perfectly good bullet proof, or rather EMP proof tech that's served our needs and replaced it with a snooping unit that measures your every move within the home.
If you can find one at a yard sale, snag it, it's safer to install over that of a couple of buss bars.

Yeah, this tech is the reason I've stayed off the grid, screw em!

They won't put anything but a digital meter on now days.  It saves time - they do drive-by meter readings.   Now... I don't know what 1KW of RF from HAM radio gear does to these china-made meters (probably), but given the way everything else starts turning on/off... I can imagine that stupid meter going haywire too!

Here's the sad part, for a few pennies more, they could've have used leaded glass as well as screen print the glass with a mineral based paint as you'd find on the glass of a microwave oven, basic shielding. Hell, in truth, they don't even need a visible window considering most utility Co's use Bluetooth to access the meter's data anyway.

But nooo, the Marxist was in a real big hurry to destroy America's production center.
Hell, maybe it was part of the plan all along, so here we are, more than 500 million power drops in the country are vulnerable to an EMF pulse, so screw the grid, even if they find a way to protect even half of the grid, the nation will still be sitting in the dark and it's all thanks to the Marxist Dim, Obozo!
