Does anyone here store food in the old fashioned ways?

I would like to know more about Root cellars, Pickling in crocks, and long term storage of meat using salt. An aunt of mine used to pack roasts in rock salt for a year at a time and as a result the meat was very tender and tasty.

My parents did this as well seeing how they live when there was little available.
This site may help, but from what I remember back in the day, the meat was way to briny for my taste.

But regardless, it's an excellent way to store fresh meat when no electricity is available in the event of a catastrophe..
