It was said by Henry David Thoreau...

"It is desirable that a man live in all respects so simply and preparedly that if an enemy take the town... he can walk out the gate empty-handed and without anxiety."
― Henry David Thoreau, Walden, or Life in the Woods

And that is the question I ask, if where you lived was suddenly struck by a natural disaster or political unrest could you just walk away and leave everything behind?  What kind of anxiety would it cause you or your spouse?  One example would be pictures and important papers.  As we have seen in the current tornadoes aftermath so many things are lost.  What options have you taken to protect some of these things from being destroyed forever.

Good point ST!
If someone were to simply take a 12" long 8" circumference PVC pipe and place all their copies of documents, seal it and bury them, they could at least have some proof if needed later.
In addition to a DL from the state, one can get an ID as well.

That is an excellent idea, but it might be wise to bury a cache like that in two different locations, far apart.

As a trivial side note, I have an unusual perspective of Waldens Pond. I awakened airsick in a blimp in a very nose down position, looking directly down at Waldens Pond and accidently making my very full and tight airsick/urine bag slide under the elevator control. Thoreu's philosophy of nature aside, it was a tense time above the pond. No bomb removal tech had a more delicate operation to perform. Success was attained, and the birds could sing again.

Of course it is, it was your idea.
But I was thinking of the one place that the family agreed to meet away from the home, but also having the originals in a safe place hidden away from looters for later retrieval.

I found a perfect food locker at an Army surplus store, it was designed to carry sensitive electronics as was water tight.
They ranged from 5cu' to 20cubic' in size and weren't very heavy.
Bury one of those stocked with at least 6 months or more of dehydrated provisions and you are safe for the long stay.
Pack some seeds for a garden and who knows how long one could endure.
Not something I'd do, but if I lived in the city, I'd definitely do it.

Don't forget you can make you own crank generator!  Be hand crank or foot power.
