Title: Conex Box Homes
Post by: Hoofer on January 07, 2018, 06:27:31 AM
Was talking to a guy on HAM radio yesterday... he's from West Virginia, "living in the ground" on top of some mountain.

Seven Shipping Containers (sorry, he has no web presence), welded together, with the south side sliding doors facing the sun.
2 12" I-beams support the "roof" top of the containers, and he has 2 feet of blown in fiberglass insulation & fiberglass mats giving him R-96 on the ceiling.  He studded the walls out, they are R-19, then covered with what sounded like Box Car Siding.  The floors are 2 layers of 3/4" plywood, topped with Oak flooring.   He heats the underground house with a 3 burner, ventless stove.  (egads!)

After welding the containers together, he cut holes for the doorways and sounds like he's completely finished the inside to look like a typical house - without windows?

All light either comes through the sliding glass doors, or via electric, there are no skylights.

Right about the time I wanted to get in further, I had power supply problems for the radio - the conversation ended.

I wanted to ask what he's doing for ventilation.

I'd like to visit his place and see how he put it together - he described the road up to the place in a way that sounded "interesting", passable when there wasn't snow on the roadway.  He and his family, had just gotten back from "town" with a several month supply of "provisions" to hunker down for the rest of the winter.

Given he was pumping out 1000 watts of RF... (at 50% efficiency, that's 2000 watts of consumption, typical), I think he's probably on Grid power.  But, a place that well insulated and buried in the earth.. probably doesn't consume much energy for heating or cooling, just lights, water, water heating, fridge.

I'm gonna see if I can get a "tour" of his 2014 palace on the mountaintop - and figure out how to post them here, if he'll let me.

About 15 years ago, we toured a Dome house a guy and his wife built, and took lots of pictures - took them 2 years to erect, while they lived in an old School Bus - also on top of a mountain.   Beautiful location, completely off the grid, and difficult to get in and out of.
