My two bit's for what it's worth.

.45 or .357, if you're gonna shoot someone make sure you hit them once and let it be done with.  9mm to many chances they will survive and sue.
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.

I agree with you. My combat rig includes a pair of M1911A1s. Of course mine were manufactured in the late '40s, with consecutive serial numbers an' were issued as guard weapons at Ft. Leavenworth.

9mm for sure.

They are small enough guns, and have enough power.

My CCW has a 45 (USGI 1911A1) (Gen 3 Glock 19)on it and soon I'm adding a S&W 5903 , 9mm is my first choice for carry , the 1911 is my choice for Militia Training and real danger situations . My.380 is a backup (third tier) home defense weapon.

Excellent choices, as well as order of use.

Why not just conceal carry the 12 gauge? Problem solved.

No but seriously, you're right, it is a big responsibility. Just out of curiosity - has anyone here ever been in a situation where carrying has saved you from being harmed?
If you had been in that situation and were not carrying, you probably would not be able to respond. Not the answer you were looking for, but look at the situation from both sides.
