Camping gear suggestions

It's about that time again, camping.

I got all the "big stuff" - but, the replaceable stuff, basically starting from scratch.
My kids have got those "camel back hydrators" they use for CAP, but since we've basically burned through the rest of the stuff, First Aid supplies, water filter, the one-use stuff- it's time to restock.

Since we also need to redo the Car & Trucks...  maybe, with a few suggestions, we can come up with 4 vehicle kits, and 4 individual kits, plus 1 group kit.

I think it's a whole lot cheaper to buy bulk, the stuff we usually use, or know-how-to-use, than buy a pre-made kit, kindergardner sissors and bandaids that don't stick, flex and tear off with a light breese.

Your suggestions, please?

One thing on the list for sure, A&D ointment...  that stuff works great.

I like Campho-Phenique also in my F/A kits also.

Cap, Civil Air Patrol?

Throw out the Ace bandages, this stuff is better than any bandaid, just a little gauze and wrap, sticks to itself.
This is a pretty cheap price too.

One item I have not purchased, yet which I think would be necessary, would be a good "how the old timers did it" book.

There's a ton of downloads on the subject, though I have a hardbound edition from the early 1800s, you can find some reprints for sale cheap.
Haven't gone through it, but here's a link to start.

CAP = Civil Air Patrol... kids pretending to be military, not necessarily Air Force.

I've used that 3M wrap in the past, but couldn't remember what it was called.  You're right, if you know how to wrap an ankle & knee correctly, making a splint is a snap - with or without a stick or something to keep it stiff.
Greatest thing about it, you can wrap with just ONE HAND or completely unassisted....  I still recommend practicing on ankles ahead of time, get those down, and any other body part is easy.

Adding that to the order... Amazon.

Almost forgot one method, in case of a wound, cover it with sterile gauze after cleaning, then wrap with gauze, finish with the 3M wrap to hold it all together and give it some form.

Been using it for minor burns/cuts/scrapes/insect bites and cold sores for as long as I can remember.  I can feel a cold sore coming on and put it on and it gone in 1 to 2 days, before it becomes a full-blown sore.  A little bit goes a long ways.

Stuff is starting to show up, so far, I like what I got... here's the list from Amazon.
(and some comments, you might know of BETTER stuff, please comment!).

3M Transpore Clear 1-Inch Wide First Aid Tape
amazon.com/gp/product/B00PG5LLHU
(It's slightly breathable, flexes a little, and easy to tear without a knife, truly multi-purpose tape - love this stuff!)

Dynarex Vitamins A&D Ointment 144 Packets
amazon.com/gp/product/B00U377576
(does better than vasoline, works on most wounds & seems to promote quicker healing & emergency fire starter)

MEDca Performance plus Gauze Sponge Cover Dressing Sterile, 4 X 4 Inches
amazon.com/gp/product/B01MZ82HO6
(Can be "packed" on/into a wound to retard bleeding, folded, etc., this size is universal, IMO 2" is almost useless.  The non-stick ones are also great.)

COVIDIEN Curity Alcohol Prep Pads
amazon.com/gp/product/B01BUD9YW0
(very thin & compact, multi-purpose, prewound treatment, cleaner & fire starter)

Spenco 2nd Skin Blister Kit
amazon.com/gp/product/B004UOTUXK
(as much as I hate carrying this kind of thing - it's the fastest way to stop a blister on a foot from getting worse so you can keep moving.)

Spenco 2nd Skin Moist Burn Pads
amazon.com/gp/product/B0000ASRWT
(quickly quiets down a painful burn, or screaming kid with a burn)

Dealmed Flexible Fabric Adhesive Bandages, 3/4" x 3"
amazon.com/gp/product/B01G5WQ7BM
(multi-purpose, as a breathable bandaid, stretch - useful as a butterfly, the fabric is full width for overlapping to cover longer cuts - IMO this is the first place 1st aid kits utterly fail, the thing most often used & they give you JUNK)

First Aid Only 5-6600 Stretch Gauze Bandage, 4-Yard Stretched Length x 2-Inch Width
amazon.com/gp/product/B00E8JTW8U
(2" digit wrap - fingers, toes, wrists wrapping)

Dukal Conforming Stretch Gauze 12-Rolls 4-Inchx4.1yds
amazon.com/gp/product/B01LBC300W
(4" ankles, knees, elbows, arms, legs)

Multi Function Olive Handle Knife 13-in-1 with Corkscrew and Scissors - Utility Tool
amazon.com/gp/product/B01MYXBXHO
(cheap, if you lose it, MEH, just sharpen it ahead of time - for the vehicle / camping kit, does not replace camping tools, ie., this is CLEAN to start with, unlike your hatchet, saw & knife)

Victorinox Swiss Army Classic SD Pocket Knife
amazon.com/gp/product/B00004YVB3
(The COMPACT essentials, sissors, tweezers, pick, knife, very small & light - prices vary, check for the cheapest - the black one; for the individual kit - does not replace camping tools, this is kept CLEAN..)

18650 battery (many brands to choose from....  )
amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Electronics-3-7V-Batteries/zgbs/electronics/10112773011
(rechargeable, fits flashlight & radio)

Pelican Flashlights Progear 1810C LED Keychain Flashlight
amazon.com/gp/product/B00P2R980E
(for the individual kits, very small & limited use, has a decent clip for hanging.)

18650 Flashlight,Smartlife15 240LM Magnetic Mini LED Torch Adjustable Focus Zoom Light Lamp, 3 Modes Waterproof
amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZW1K60
(for the vehicle kits, camping kits, takes the rechargeable battery, cheap, compact and has a switch that WORKS, lanyard for hanging)

Tecsun PL880 Portable Digital PLL Dual Conversion AM/FM, Longwave & Shortwave Radio with SSB
amazon.com/gp/product/B00GJ51NVA
(for vehicle kits, camping kits, good sound in a small box, at low volume the battery lasts +50hrs, recharges off a USB.  This will receive HAM radio easily!)

Emergency Mylar "blanket"
https://www.amazon.com/Emergency-Mylar-Thermal-Blankets-Pack/dp/B00WH7AE9Q
(the ONLY time I've ever used one, it was during a COLD WET RAIN that seemed like I'd never stop - stopped the shivering, it worked)

...........

The portable kits are for carrying over distance, light-weight, just enough for one or two injuries.
Vehicle / camping kits are not as concerned with WEIGHT, enough supplies for a family or group of people over a week or two - so the whole excursion isn't ruined by an unplanned "event" that requires multiple "minor treatments".

More to come - I still need a container, actually the LAST thing when I figure out how much stuff will be going into each kit.
(Maybe you've been suckered into buying a first aid kit based on the container, but regretted it the first time you used it - they filled it with some of the worst junk, bandaids that don't stick, gauze pads that have cotton falling out, scissors meant for kindergärtners, chopsticks for a tweezer, cremes that you'd rather start fires with than put on a wound, gauze & tape that defys application and adhesion... all that in a box that cannot be added to and has no other use.)

More to come - add your suggestions and links if you have them.  Multi-purpose is better than single purpose.

Wifey suggested we also include stuff like: pain killers, antihistamine, indigestion, anti-itch cream.
All animals are created equal; Some just take longer to cook.   Survival is keeping an eye on those around you...

I thought it was just a camping trip, not a triage for the end of times.
One thing I always take with me is a lidocaine pain type cream for minor burns etc. Even a rash can debilitate you and make taking a single step painful, a cheap pain creme can be a life saver.

There....  I was getting to the camping gear stuff, just one thing at a time - staying alive.
Speaking of which ... I'm inclined to pack a 380 in an individual pack, only because of weight.

I HATE the taste of Aluminum pans in cooking, and Cast Iron is heavy.

When I used to camp, I carried two medium stainless steel Revere ware pans, light and easy to clean with wet gravel.
Nowadays I have a full blown kitchen down at the confluence of my two creeks. Oh sure, we still cook over the campfire, but when you've got a bunch of families trying to feed over one small fire, that just don't cut it, too many bad feelings start when people get too hungry and start pissing about.
This year I have a ton of clean up to do down there, both creeks jumped their banks and washed right through camp.
