I edited down the list, but the author has a few books out that may be a must for some people.

1.      Guns!

2.      Water –
3.      Heat –

4.      Food –
5.      Medical supplies –

6.      Power and Lights –

7.      Communications – Make sure you have a cell phone, CB Radio,
8.      Transportation –  A larger vehicle with extra storage space and four-wheel drive is best.

9.      Entertainment – This may sound silly to you, but have you ever been trapped inside a house with four screaming kids with nothing to do? You'll need books and board games for your own sanity. If you have the generator and lots of fuel, make the whole adventure an apocalyptic movie marathon! I'm talking about good family movies like Tremors, Zombieland, and Red Dawn, you know, the basics.

10.  God – No home should be without God, especially in a time of emergency. I know that God isn't considered a "thing", but he is the ruler of all "things", so I'm using Him to round out my list of 10 things every home should have for short-term survival.

1. Learn how to "read" the wind, water, clouds etc. Dangerous weather such as sudden storms, tornado, snow etc. Living in the city will dull your senses.

2. Take a hiking trip and look around in the forest at all the things that can be used in as emergency food sources, look for oak trees and acorns, take some home and learn how to cook them, an important source of nutrition.

3. Gas mask...I know it sounds stupid, but everyone should have a gas mask for family memebers. do you know how many toxic chemicals are routinely transported thru urban areas? What happens when a tanker truck overturns on the freeway or a train goes off the track near the center of town and you have a big green cloud floating around?

Do you know your hazmat signs on said vehicles?

Good point Billy, when it comes down to the pressing moment, it is definitely not the time to start learning.
People that don't hit the wilderness on a regular basis may want to pick up a book on survival, as to what is eatable, and how to cure it for consumption.

Like acorns, you can take the bark form the Tan oak tree and boil them together, the tannic acid cures the acorn, taking it's bitterness away.
The bark is also used for tanning hides.

Gas mask is an excellent tip as well, if there are fires from looters, you may need it to get out of the house.

Actually, Tom Brown has written a survival guide for city people.  I have read it,years ago,,, very informative... I will find his link, he runs a school out in the Pine Barrens. Boy to go there for a lesson or two would be good. My brother went to I think 10 of his sessions,,,he comes home n shows me what he learned.... From reading his books,,,I have learned one heck of alot.....

Hey, whatever it takes to get more people in here, Solar.  The CPF is a great place, and more people need to know that it exists!

It does not matter what or how much equipment you have, you need the intangibles as well. There are others, but these come to mind. If you have a family, many of the survival skills can be played as a game. Then they become easy, and not as threatening as having to learn them on the go.

Wow...you are absolutely correct.  You can have all the "stuff" you need but it you don't have the mindset or skills it will not be as effective.   8)
