But what happens after a week or longer when people get desperate? That's the big question.
I think it's safe to say, the city is not the place to be. People just aren't prepared like rural folk are.

Then we go feral I suppose.

Though I've been out foraging every Sunday for the last few months.

Yep, that's the problem in the city, at first everyone pulls together, that is, until the stores start running low.
People rely on what's in their refrigerator, but when the power is off for a week they get a short fuse and start getting a bit desperate.

Stocking up and foraging is a damn good idea, most never consider life having ups and downs, they think tomorrow ill be just like yesterday and all will be fine, till a natural disaster hits.

Walks is right, you could pick up 5 or 10 acres of raw land pretty cheap assuming there is some in your area for sale, but you could pick up a storage container, stock it up and leave it secured on the land.
This would at least give you an option other than staying behind.

My concerns aren't so much of a national calamity, rather earthquakes, fires, etc, natural disasters.
Unlike the the SF quake a century ago where people came together, today we have leaches thinking only of themselves.
So if a quake were to cut off all supplies, people will quickly turn on each other in the cities.

But assuming an airburst nuke were to be set off somewhere over the US causing an EMP, nothing would work, not even radios and no one would know what was going on, but I'm almost certain the national guard would be called out immediately to quell any angry mobs and would be supplying rations.
So an EMP is not really a concern IMO.

How would they be able to call out the National Guard after a CME or EMP attact? Radio, TV and phone communications would be out and cars wouldn't work unless they are pre 1980 or so. Assuming some of what the Guard has been issued has been sufficiently hardened, maybe they could drive around, find and collect some of their members. How many members would leave their families behind in such circumstances? The guard would have to accept family members being brought along.

In all probability, these scenarios will never happen, at least I hope they won't. As for land purchases, I live in northern Virginia. Land prices in this area are obscene. Reasonable land can be had but it's over a hundred miles away. That's way I'm concerned about travailing such distances under those circumstances and at my age.

They're currently retrofitting vehicles today, here's a white paper from one of the contractors in the bid process.

If I were in your shoes, I'd just buy a shipping container, works as a Faraday cage and you could easily store years of food.
I have two 10' x 20' containers, one 1/3rd full of dehydrated food, enough for 3 years, so you can see it doesn't require a lot of space.
