Why talk about football when baseball is on and is the best sport?

We talk football because baseball is often long stretches of boredom. The only thing worse is watching soccer (I refuse to call it football).

I put soccer on about the same level as golf in terms of painful to watch. I think I'm also one of the few guys in this country who hates watching basketball.

Watching soccer is like watching a bunch of athletes being simultaneously tased -- WAY too much shit going on there. Also, I don't understand the attraction of a sport that for the most part doesn't require that a player even has hands.

Giles, baseball is boring to watch if you're not into the game, but it may be more loaded with nuance and art than any other popular game I can think of. NFL and college football are like this -- five seconds of 22 guys crashing into each other, then a minute or two or ten of 22 guys and their coaches standing around talking about it. Lather, rinse, repeat. It's like NASCAR -- left turn, go fast, left turn, go fast, left turn, go fast......... Baseball is whistling fastballs, cracking bats, and crunching cleats, but the game is played between those things.

Golf is awesome.  It may be boring if you don't play it I guess, but if you play golf, you probably watch it.

I played it once and I suck. I can appreciate how much skill is involved but it is certainly far from "awesome" to watch. But then again, I'm pretty darn good at poker and enjoy watching the world series of poker on espn when I'm certain most people who don't play would hate to watch it. I'm guessing it's similar to golf in that way.

Everybody who has played it once sucks.  It takes practice.

It's pretty similar. I love poker and love to watch it, so it's the same thing I guess.  The suspense in watching golf is pretty intense, like watching poker.
