Every time I went to the Masters practice round I would spend time at #16. It is fun to watch those guys skip it across the water to the green.

I did that once at the American river course, clean across the river. I lost more balls there than any other course. The entire course slopes towards the water, once it starts rolling, kerplunk!
Oh, and never made a hole in one there either.

Sounds like a poorly designed course. Unfortunately there are too many of those.

Oh God Yes! Sacramento has better than 50, the oldest courses are the best but small, the newest are the toughest and longest.
The ones built in the 70s are the worst of all, they built them to sell housing tracts. These things look good from the air, but they suck, too easy to hit cars and houses, with skinny fairways.

My area has some of the most beautiful laid out here in the mountains, great views and fairways, but seasonal, hard to play in the snow.

Absolutely! The course at my club is a 1929 Donald Ross design and it is a classic. Those built to sell houses are usually on the part of the tract not suitable for homes. There were many of these developed in the 70's as you stated.
