You know on the subject of head injuries in the NFL, why don't they change the equipment. Go from the hard helmet to a softer padded model. As a matter of fact, take all the equipment that's rigid and place it inside a softer lining. This answer seems obvious to me, but I never see any of the talking heads suggest equipment changes.

It seems like a no brainer. (pardon the pun)
But it's not like a motor bike where you will definitely hit something harder when you wreck; all they would hit on the field is grass or astroturf or other soft padded protection the other players are wearing, which would also absorb some of the shock.

I wonder if it has something to do with contractual agreements with equipment manufacturers, it would require a lot of retooling, so to speak.

I think you're onto something here Giles, you should write some letters.

I'm not sure how much a softer helmet would lessen the impact of one's brain hitting the skull.  I'm not doctor, but it seems like soft helmet or not, the brain is still getting smacked around...

I think he meant you still have a hard shell, but coated with something squishy.

Have ypu ever seen the quarterback's helmet after they've had a concussion. It usually looks odd because the padded it on the outside. So if they know this helps, why isn't it padded like that all the time?

I guess what I'm saying is if, say, he's in the pocket in the middle of his reads, and a DB slips by and blindsides him, I think that is where most of the concussions occur, do they not?  I don't think most of them occur with the skull contacting the ground, but just getting hit and the brain getting smacked by the jolt...  I may be wrong...

I think padding the helmet would end using it as a weapon. No use slamming a Nerf ball into some one.

I wonder if they have considered small G-Force recorders in helmets?
This way they could simply read the numbers after a really hard hit to the head and determine if the player sustained enough force to be removed from the game.
The downside might be the opposing team could use this as a way to remove players...

Just tossing ideas....

Good idea!
Player: " I can still play coach" !
Coach: "Jones, the sideline reader says you just took the equivalent of having your head run over by a small truck. Take your helmet off , and sit down; your game is over".

I wouldn't think it would cost all that much?

The players are faster, bigger, stronger and playing on non giving surfaces that just make them faster.  Often the concussions are not from the initial hit, it's the manner in which they hit the ground.  Also you have players going out to play less than 100% making them more susceptible.  Many concussions are never noticed and they cause long term problems.  We see the big hits in the middle of the field but can you imagine what goes on at the line?  Improving the equipment surely will help but this is a business where you don't come out unscathed.

Well said! If you have a functioning brain, you don't get into the NFL thinking you won't be hurt.

I'll say that again, slowly... If you have a functioning brain...

The line hits are minor, I think. The big ones are linebackers and corners and defensive ends plowing into ball carriers. Simple physics -- F=mV2.

Mr. Sandman

Speaking of the NFL, are there any Atlanta Falcons fans in here? They are 5-0 for first time in history.
I once was a Skins - Steelers - 49ers - Bears - Vikings and Green Bay Packers fan once, but never a cow(boy) fan.   I do like the Cowgirls.   :tounge:

I hope I can talk the wife in going back to Texas to see the Dallas Cowgirls   oops! cow(boys) stadium up close.
