I am a big baseball fan and following the NCAA playoffs closely. This weekend is the super regional matches. One of the match ups is Stanford and Mississippi State in Starkville, MS. I am very familiar with Starkville and it struck me the culture shock some, if not all, Stanford players are experiencing. Starkville is 180 degrees from Palo Alto, CA. Those Stanford folks will have a hard time finding any of the liberal nonsense of the San Francisco area in the Starkville area.

Depending on wind direction, they can get the coast breeze of rotting fish, or Martizez oil cracking plant, SF shit streets, or the bay, where everything the valley dumps in the river winds up.
Usually there's a real strong breeze straight off the ocean, 25 to 30 mph, but when it's warm around 5 mph, the stench can be pretty overwhelming.
Never understood the attraction to the area myself.

Years ago I was playing pickup ball at a court near a sewage processing plant and the small of crap was thick in the air.  After a few games I couldn't take anymore and had to leave.  At that time, basketball was pretty much the only thing I obsessed over and looked forward to doing, so for me to quit is saying something.  I can't imagine breathing it in all the time.

No offense meant to Starkville but I would not want to live in either one of the cities.
Stanfored has a intolerable population and a nicer infrastructure.
Starkville has little infrastructure but is filled with nice people. It would be a small town if not for the college. The tuition that they pay at Stanford U is about about $280,000 for the 4 years assuming they did not get a sports scholarship. They could buy a 200 sq ft house in Starkville for that.

You are correct Starkville is no metropolis and basically dependent on MSU. It is growing and even has a Courtyard by Marriot and Hilton Garden Inn now.
