Another fantastic DARPA project led to the U.S. Navy's rail gun, which sends rounds more than 6 times the speed of sound, and experts say has changed the dynamic of warfare forever. It's now operational after lengthy testing, and best of all the rounds themselves can also be used in non-railgun weapons.

Fascinating posts. Thanks!

I am concerned about the emerging asymmetrical threat to our aircraft carriers and other large combat vessels by hypersonic torpedoes. Countries may not be able to afford billion dollar carriers or battle ships, but they might be able to obtain hypersonic torpedoes for which no effective countermeasures exist at present (that I am aware). Of course, my top secret security clearance has lapsed so maybe the eggheads have come up with something and are keeping mum about it.
