I use Windows 10 as my operating system. I do not use any other features and I have learned to live with all the updates. What irritates me is how the system tries to "hijack" me into using their home page which leads to all other kind of shenanigans. Any suggestions other than changing operating systems?
I made an amazing discovery.
Turn off Win update. I know, most people think you'll go unprotected from all kinds of stuff, but that's just not the case.
Most of what Win does is write with the corporate entity in mind, it's they who get attacked the most, what we experience is that of mosquitoes, nothing a good antivirus prog couldn't handle..
But here's what I discovered. Win updates are usually a fix from the last screwed up update, so if you wait, say, a year, you don't have a years worth of updates,m just the latest in a line of failed fixes.

Which worked for about 10-12 months, and like magic, I suddenly got major software updates - Gigabytes worth of data, like newer versions of WIN10 that *must* be installed. Also like magic, one of the older versions of a program I use, "vanished into thin air", and programs I'd paid for... suddenly I'm getting prompts whenever I went online for Office 365 & cloud services, One Drive, etc., if those machines sense there's an Internet connection, they "Call HOME".
They scanned my system, targeted advertising based on my installed software, and deleted a program I depend upon.
Also agree, the "fixes" seem to be fixes to fixes that screwed up something else.

I literally had a mirror experience as you just described, and it all stopped after I canceled updates.
