Windows 10 migration back to 8

I had enough of Windows 10 burning up cellular data, and migrated a 3rd PC back to Windows 8.0   After a year of habitual slowness, longer boot times, and programs that wouldn't run, even in combustibility mode, I said, "enough already!!!"   It shouldn't take 45 seconds to boot off a solid state drive, when Windows 8 does it in under 10 seconds.  I mean 100% clean boot, power on, cold start to opening screen.

Then I tether to the Iphone for Internet, and it crawls, because even though I have the Data restriction option checked, Windows 10 STILL insists on download those dreaded updates.

Am I worried about not getting updates to Windows 8?   damning viruses, hacking - Hell NO!   Disk Image Restore - DONE.  Plus... I got Windows Media Center back.  Pretty nice program if you've got a Media Server and took the time to generate the catalogs.

One other thing, I PAID for MS Office, and I'm NOT going to migrate to "cloud computing".   It ain't like I'm dragging a Desk Top machine, 27" graphics monitor, etc. around with a Cat-6 cable behind it.  Darn right we're hard wired!

and I just did 6 machines from XP to vista.

DOH!!! I completely misread what he said.
In response, I wish we could all just revert to the last actual functioning, working version of Windows, that being, Win 98.

Win8 made me dump all my 32-bit machines for 64-bit, and load them with at least 4g of RAM - which gives nice performance.
I really like those BeeBox machines... they also run off 12VDC, low power consumption, speed, 1080p & 4k graphics and USB3.  We mount them on the back of the monitor(s).  Paired with a solid state drive (chip drive on the MB), and a TB drive for additional storage, I love them.

After trying Win10 on them.... at first it looked fine, but the constant updates made them slower and slower - slower booting, programs running slower, WTF is going on here?   We're updating updates, and then I get this "Install win10 upgrade" Icon!?!?   Enough of beta testing for MS - and BTW, I am NOT going to "cloud storage" anything.  Talk about a disaster waiting to happen.  Sure, I'll give up all the software I paid for, and migrate to Office 365 - for WHAT?!?   A version of VISIO with a menu bar is crowded with non-design, worthless template crap?  Office 2010 was the last good version, good integration, good scaling.  After that, I see ZERO appreciable improvement in Word, Excell, Visio, Power Point.  If I want to "collaborate", I'll share my desktop.   Everything from 2013 on, is s-l-o-w-e-r and cluttered, IMO.

So, why do I use Microsoft products?   Because I have to, not because I want to.  Haven't used MS or Google web surfing programs in a long, long time.  Never though I'd find relief going backwards, but Win8 is just fine for my 64bit machines & software.

It's sad that no one has developed an OS that is bare bones loaded frontend on hard memory, then if you like, you are more than welcome to add Office, or any number of specialized programs, but give me the working basics, allow me to turn on the power and immediately go to work, instead of the long extended boot times associated with Windows, only to discover, a download is underway, which will require another reboot in a few minutes.
There goes the next hour.

I'm the consumer, sell me WTF I want, and not frontload it with Office, Adobe or any of the hundreds of POS that come loaded with Win, I'll decide what I want after purchase.

I'd like to at least TRY an OS without all the embedded programs.   Problem, I suspect, they're using THEIR pet programs as the basis for simple navigation.  Internet Explorer being user interface for file management, instead of a stand-alone program like X-tree.  Now it's something you can't get rid of - bloat code.

Someone is probably saying, "Yeah, sure, I'd like to see YOU function without all the embedded help MS provides!"
My point still is, get rid of the embedded code, and allow me the choice to run what I want, when I want... MS is painting themselves into a corner.  More is not automatically better.

Yeah, let me choose from a list of progs. Like most people, I only use about 1% of the loaded progs that come in Win anyway, so allow me the ability to shut off the crap I never even use.
As it stands now, I use Task Manager to close a shitload of progs Win loads every reboot, I just don't need snoops running in the background asking for updates to shit I don't need.

And no, I don't trust Microshaft in the first place.

funny!   When I think of viruses and hacks ... I get the government and MS mixed up, who's doing a better worse job!

With the code running in the background for all sorts of things - and then you need to "open" the object to use it, wouldn't it be simpler and ultimately faster to have an external program?  Oh, I get it, if we keep it running in the background, it LOADS faster... but slows down everything else and chokes system RAM.   Which begs the question, which was more important to the programmers, your data or their application.   "Our program runs FINE - your data SUCKS"... LOL

For simplicity, and to reach a broader market of PC illiterates - Windows, the Apple clone.
IMHO... if Microsoft wanted to expand the market further, create a 2 tiered operating system, and thus challenge the UNIX/LINUX market.
Keep the boated OS, Winders 10 for those desktop power users...  meh.
As you said, allow the Computer literate to turn off, unload idle programs, free up RAM and put raw speed back into computing.  (I might actually like MS again...)

Case-in-point.   I recently turned up 2 DVRs for managing the farm.  UNIX based.  Unwrap the things, and started digging around for "software", a CD, or web address in the literature - nothing.  "Now I'm gonna get pissed..", I thought, "Got screwed again, just bought 2 plastic bricks, with a tiny little MB inside."   Without something to BOOT the box... well, I hooked up a monitor & mouse (not even a keyboard port...?), and fired it up.  WHOA....!!!  The entire operating system on a chip.  User interface is quite acceptable, and it can upload to a server, use an internal drive, or pump the camera's feed to the Internet.
It does the minimum, record cameras to a file, send alerts, keep a schedule, etc., but does is v-e-r-y good.   Of course it's air-gapped.

Microsoft ought to think about a two tiered OS, one for "everything in an OS" and another than can be collapsed for speed and maximum free RAM (for non-MS programs).

Remember when there was a little Dog who would grab your document and take it to a garbage can (deleting a file)?
Why didn't they make the Dog chew it up to delete - and undelete by barfing all over the screen, or crapping a pile of characters, that'd spread out into your document?  Programmers today got no imagination....

For me, that would be a perfect solution. Load the very basics of Win, nothing more, if I want Adobe, I'll open it, when I browse the web, I'll choose the function, I don't need Win to even poke its nose where it doesn't belong, and is totally forbidden as far as I'm concerned, from even knowing what I'm doing.

The only bitch -- the ONLY one -- I have about Win10 is the never-ending update downloads and reboots. To my mind, the very best OS is the one you never have to think about at all. But MS seems determined to keep you thinking about Win10 about once a week, while you sit there on your ass watching that little timer thingy.

Getting back to the OP, Win10 to Win8 is horribly backwards. Win 7 was VERY good stuff, actually, I think, Microsoft's apology to the world for shitting out the worst MS OS ever -- Windows Vista. Win8 was Win7 with a touch-screen GUI and a lot of useless shit tacked onto it. In perspective, Win8 is to Win7 as WinMe was to Win98 -- the pointless near-ruination of a good OS.

With Win10 MS kept all the good things from Win7 and got away from most of the useless baggage of Win8. Stick with Win10.

I shut off updates a year ago and haven't seemed to notice any problems.
Makes ya wonder if they're actually downloading, and not uploading all my data.

Yup, the endless DL of updates, was driving me nuts.   45minutes and several reboots while I'm at a customer site, trying to do an internet speed test... he was not impressed.

In my personal opinion, WIN 8 is still faster, and runs everything I ran under WIN 7, just faster.   WIN 10 was the step backwards, several programs would not run at all, and older printers have no drivers.  WIN 8 boots completely usually under 15 seconds, often 8 seconds.   WIN 7... sometimes 5 minutes.  Best of all, once I have everything I want loaded for a WIN 8 machine, it's still quick - everything just pops!  And that software includes some real 64-bit memory hogs, like VISIO.   WIN 7 ran 32-bit stuff just fine, we still use it at work (and did I say, I hate it?).  I guess it depends what you're using it for.

Eh.

Despite the fact I've built and operated computers since the early 1980's, I am no expert.

I'm perfectly content with Windows 10.

It does what I want, cost me very little - and I guess that is it.
