Imagine playing a game of Old Maid with a child. She is about to pick the Old Maid card in your hand, which would cost her the game. You think about how excited she'd be if she won, so you hint that she might want to select another card. She does, and she wins. You're both happy. But was letting her win a wise move?

Psychologists and child-rearing experts have long said kids need to lose once in a while. They claim that losing at games or sports helps children build coping skills, develop empathy and learn what the real world is like. Now, a new study out of Amherst College and the University of Virginia says intentionally throwing a game or challenge may result in children who can't effectively make judgments or read important information and cues.

In the study, researchers conducted a series of trials where 4- and 5-year-olds (most of them from white, middle- and upper-class families) played a game with hidden objects. Two adults gave the kids clues to the location of the objects. One adult gave accurate clues, while the other gave false ones. Then, the researchers set up the game so that half of the kids always found the hidden object, no matter what the adults said. The remaining children played a game left to chance, where they were more likely to find the hidden object if they listened carefully and figured out which adult gave useful clues.

Afterwards, the researchers asked the kids which of the two adults they'd select to help them find more hidden objects. Unsurprisingly, the kids in the unrigged game preferred the adult who gave accurate tips. But those in the rigged version had no preference. They didn't realize only one adult gave them helpful information.

That means if you always let children beat you at Old Maid, they might not learn to consider the number of cards in their hand, what's in your hand, what's in the draw pile and where they last spotted the Old Maid. Letting kids win all the time could cause them to develop a general inability to spot important information relevant to future success.\

Make no mistake: the progs have spent the last half century plus using the education system, as well as government influence over the medical and psychiatric institutions to weaken the people so they are more amenable to the loss of our liberties.

They want us weak, simple minded children in adult bodies who are easily manipulated and controlled. They've removed academic recognitions such as honor roles, valedictorian and salutatorian as "unfair" to those who don't measure up. In fact they don't care about "fair". All they care about is a weak, easily controlled populace. The current generations of weak minded snowflakes have been deliberately brain washed to be the emotional wimps they have become, needing "safe zones" to protect them from "unsavory" ideas.

The old saying, "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime," has a corollary. "Give a man a fish daily, he becomes your slave."  People in the democrat controlled areas are brought up being handed everything on a platter: free housing, free food, free "education", even free fracking phones! All to make them too weak to be self sufficient.

I only hope "Make America Great Again" includes a good, hearty "fitness program" for the psycho-social mess the progs have allowed themselves to become.

Well said. In the corollary, the ant, and the grasshopper, the ant no longer represents common sense and self sufficiency, the ant is a selfish white bastard that deserves the confiscatory hand of big govt, for hoarding. (Sadly, this has already been the practice of govt and its taxation policy, where some see paying taxes based on income as patriotic.)

What we see here is what appears to be a group rediscovering what most take for granted. Simple common sense behavior, that success equals reward, yet these so called psychologists were under the illusion that reward should always be the outcome regardless.
"Johnie failed math again" Well that's fine, it's the fact that he tried is all that matters, here's your trophy.
"He didn't try, he never even attended class. Then it's the teachers fault for creating a hostile environment, so Johnie still deserves a reward for his suffering.

That scenario (summarized/dramatized) took place in Ca. I remember reading about it a few years back, it hit me because the kid went to the same school as I did 50 years later.
It's what every failure of a kid dreams of, getting off for bad behavior and having everyone else blamed for their bad behavior.
