Hmmm...  You know, that graph up above looks a LOT like this one:

Which is, of course, the famous Mann hockey stick for global warming.  Maybe we stumbled upon the actual cause of global warming - the poles are wandering! :o

Well that and the Sun.   ;D

Now we just need to figure out how to tie polar restlessness and solar output to CO2 emissions and we're all set!

We're gonna be rich, I tell you - RICH!

You only need to take a page from the Lib play book.

Create a dire situation that requires everyone else to sacrifice but you, and you can be the cheerleader.
Then use emotion to berate the nonbelievers and accuse those that present facts to the contrary as being haters of puppies and little children.

Oh wait, that didn't work with global warming...

How about the race card?
Oh wait, that ones all used up.
Umm, how about food shortages? :))

I don't know that anyone can make worthwhile predictions about a pole shift. There's a pretty good piece at Wikipedia - link[url=http://- with nothing of the sort hysterics you find in the popular press. The last reversal occurred about 780,000 years ago for whatever good the knowledge will do anyone.

Interesting read, and it cements my belief that nothing will really change.
With that said, it still remains to be seen what will happen to our system of pole reference.
Will we refer to the new North as North or South or vice verca, or will it take several decades for the poles to settle in?
Whatever the case, we may be referring to the past as (PPS) Previous Pole Shift, like when the PPS, North Korea will be South Korea so all reference to the past would be PPS North Korea.

Just a thought, but it might be a good idea for Gov to start thinking how we will deal with the after effects.

Not just North and South Korea. North and South Carolina and Dakota will have to swap letterhead.

And your point about how long the transition'll take is worth considering.

If the change is bim, bam, boom, North is South then no big problem but The State Formerly Known as South Dakota Soon To Be North Dakota is a little cumbersome. We'll probably have to come up with something a bit more manageable.

Kidding aside, a pole flip is going to have effects and some of them aren't going to be fun but wildlife's been through this lots of time, if only at 100,000 or so year intervals so there's some mechanism built in to the survivors to help mitigate the effects of the flip. The reason I don't think it'll have all that much effect on humanity is the actual duration of the pole flip.

The evidence suggests that it takes the reversals between 1,000 and 10,000 years to complete. I kind of doubt that with that much time to deal with the situation we won't have developed methods of containing problems. Heck, we might even find ways to capitalize on the situation. Given a reasonable amount of time the free market inevitably makes lemonade from lemons, if the price is right.

Um, why do we care if the people in Poland are shifting? Has anyone asked them why they're shifting so rapidly?

Duh - because if they do it too quickly they could capsize the country!  Just like the danger with Guam  that Congressman Hank Johnson warned us about...

There's people's LIVES at stake here!

Would that leave a hole in Europe? (Maybe we could call it "Holand.") What guarantees do we have that it would capsize along recognized international borders? Is there some kind of cookie-cutter thing that the UN can use to make that happen?

Inquiring minds need to know...  :P :P :P

Maybe only the magnetic Poles would capsize.

Yes, maybe, but the magnetic ones would be able to cling -- magnetically -- to the hull of a rescue ship, wouldn't they? What would happen if that rescue ship capsizes?

So many permutations...

Yeah, and while we're on that...  They want us to call it Holland, they call it the Netherlands, and they consider themselves Dutch.  WTF is with that?  Is it Holland, the Netherlands, or Dutch?  Give me a friggin break!  You don't get 3 names, no how, no way!

Maybe they deserve to capsize too, or have some of those boys with their fingers in the dike take a break...
