I suppose it is a good thing that the NSA doesn't have a say in the matter. The article states "If the executive agencies have their way...", but they don't and never have. It is Congress that tells the NSA what information they can and cannot collect, and if that is contrary to what the US Constitution allows, then the courts will tell Congress what information the NSA can and cannot collect. The Executive Agencies have no say in the matter. They are only required to comply with the law, which the NSA has not done recently.

Makes one appreciate the wisdom of our founding fathers. Obama could not undo it in eight years and that was his primary goal.

There has been a lot of rogue federal agencies, the NSA, EPA, FBI, IRS, BLM, ATF, etc., etc. and they always seem to go rogue whenever there is a Democrat in the White House.
What is really going to freak out the NSA are quantum computers. When quantum computers eventually hit the market no encryption will be safe anywhere. Even PGP, with a 4,096-byte encryption key, could be broken in minutes with a 10-qubit quantum computer. It will make all security obsolete.
The problem I can foresee in the future is that Congress is not able to keep up with the current technology. As a result we will end up with badly written laws that do not protect the rights of individuals. We are already seeing that happen today.
