This could explain a few things...

The superstitious among us should beware of extra-big werewolves this weekend, as the second "supermoon" in as many years rises this Saturday. A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon's perigee (the point at which its closest to Earth), making it appear extra-big and extra-bight in the sky, Space.com reports.

The moon will be at its fullest on Saturday at 11:35 p.m. EDT, at which point it will also be at perigee — just 221,802 miles from Earth. Skywatchers can expect to see the moon shining 16% brighter than usual. As for other effects, experts say that while tides will be particularly high and low, but the difference won't be enough to bring about any natural disasters.

No disasters, but it make for one hell of a Razor clam digging at the ocean in washington state at low tide.

Diggers can take 15 razor clams per day.   With tides like this I can limit out in under 10 min.
Morning low tides will be as follows:

  • May 5, Saturday, 6:32 a.m., -1.5 feet
  • May 6, Sunday, 7:19 a.m., -2.1 feet
  • May 7, Monday, 8:07 a.m., -2.3 feet

I got some pretty good pictures of it. At least, as good as I can get with a $20 telescope and a 5 year old Nikon.

Today going into town the sun was coming up in the East and the moon was setting in the W/NW.  The moon was lit up like a big white light just hanging there.

This was the best one I got. The moon was starting to get brighter, but not too bright.

This one was earlier, when it was still reddish.

Another early shot.

I took a few others with the telescope's lower zoom setting, but those didn't come out too good. Also, it was kind of hazy in Tampa that night, so most of them came out looking like this.

Of course, by the time it got really bright, most of the haze had dissipated. The brightness turned my telescope into a  flashlight.
