One could say this is a good thing for mankind.  Another step in making life on this planet "better".  But by the same token, it also shows how dependent mankind is in using the internet.  So much of our daily lives is tied in with the internet.  Think about, in the event the internet was to shut down.....  what effect would that have on our daily lives?  Our world would truely be a total mess.

There are some theorists that the event "Three Days of Darkness" refers to that event taking place.  Granted, I use the term theorist....

In making that claim, the theory indicates that the internet going off line without any type of human intervention possible.  The shutdown would be of a supernatural event.

Some of us grew up before all this automation, which provided me a great career.
We actually drove places, and met people, and did real things.  Volleyball, softball, swimming...  It was fun.

It usually ended with music, sometimes dancing, and if you were lucky a cute girl became a new friend.

The point is if we wanted human interaction, especially (semi-random) group interaction, we had to get out of the house and find or make it.

It would cause natural events in this unnatural times.

You make it sound like a bad thing socially.
Though, business has become dependent upon connectivity, half the nation would go about their lives naturally, as if nothing ever happened.

One of my coworkers was talking about what-if-the-internet-got-shutdown a few months ago. Here's what I remember from the conversation:
You have to talk to someone face-to-face, or go through the trouble is sending a letter. Its hard to be insulting and disrespectful when you have to look someone in the eye, unless they've really pissed you off, so people might be calmer in general.
If you can't see them and you don't want to write you would have to make phone calls and listen to people's voices instead of just reading words on a screen, so when you do talk with people, you could here all those things that tell you what's in their head that doesn't end up in just the typing.
You wouldn't get the news delivered to your phone 24 hours a day, so you would be more relaxed and less angry at things you can't change.
You wouldn't have to listen to people with those crazy ideas like disbanding the cops or giving foreigners free money, so you might not know about what's going on to be angry about it. That might not be good, but gets me to my last point
So I think we would be happier, but not no what is going on. My mom used to tell me when my older brother would go out to party and I asked her if she knows what he was up to she would say "ignorance is bliss". So maybe that's what we would be feeling.
I don't like being angry but so many things make me mad.

Good points! That's how it used to be and people were more civil, that, and you had a lot more free time to actually talk to people in person, and if you didn't want to be bothered, you just took a walk.
Before answering machines and call waiting, the phone was considered a tool, you didn't use it unless it was absolutely necessary.

I could very easily live without the internet and be very happy all the way around.

I did not let answering machines or call waiting run my life   I got the phone for my use.   The answering machine was for other.  That way I could call back if and when I liked.

I'm an amateur astronomer and am livid over this stunt.  It's utterly unnecessary and could ruin the night sky for all star gazers if fully implemented.  Imagine just taking your children out to the countryside just to see all the stars there are and they're  destroyed by 42,000 satellites.  Musk should be stopped from this insanity.  The internet is fine without this.  And the space junk is going to seriously interfere with necessary missile launches, possibly ICBMs too.  2000 satellites is more than enough.  We need to stop space junk in its tracks.

I live high in the Sierra and the stars were limitless, but 30 years later, and I could probably count all of them in 10 minutes. Light pollution from the Sacramento Valley.
I'd be happy to see satellites.

That's way too bad.  It has happened too much and there are a lot of easy fixes to light pollution.  But you're not going to see the satellites like stars.  They'll just ruin your view of the stars Through a telescope by blocking their light and ruin your photographs of nebula with odd streaks.  Not to mention contribute greatLy to the space junk problem.

If you want to see stars near where you are, head up to northeast California near Goose Lake.  Very dark up there.

There's a star party I want to attend out there every year.

Yeah, it wasn't all that long ago I could watch the shuttle fly over, even remember watching Sputnik cross the sky.
There is a movement underway to change the lights on the ground, but I agree, the more crap we put up there the worse is going to get. There should be a law, that after end of life, they are pushed towards the sun.

I just ordered our Starlink satellite.

Check availability for your area

https://www.starlink.com/

Sweet, cable speed, compared to a tricked out modem.

Starlink is now available in limited supply in your service area.

During beta, users can expect to see data speeds vary from 50Mb/s to 150Mb/s and latency from 20ms to 40ms in most locations over the next several months as we enhance the Starlink system. There will also be brief periods of no connectivity at all.

As we launch more satellites, install more ground stations and improve our networking software, data speed, latency and uptime will improve dramatically. For latency, we expect to achieve 16ms to 19ms by summer 2021.

To check availability for your location, visit Starlink.com and re-enter your email and service address. If available, you will be immediately redirected to the Starlink order page.

Availability is limited so orders must be completed within 15 minutes of landing on the order page. If you are not able to order at this time, the Starlink team will continue to send updates as more capacity becomes available.

$99.0 per month, unit costs $500.0 up front. We'll save over a hundred a month between Dish TV and ViaSat Internet.

We dumped Hughes for ViaSat, Hughes cost more for just half the data. We were so happy to get 100 gigs for one hundred plus, and Viasat was far more dependable, but we still blow through 100 gigs fast.
Last month we blew threw it in 3 days thanks to a fuckin Windows update for both machines.

Just getting unlimited will be a huge deal for us, and Toy can sit and watch videos finally and download games without worrying if it's the end of the month.
They said 2 to 4 weeks, but I expect it next week.

My internet speed on a good day.
Download Mbps 3.22
Upload      Mbps 1.07

unlimited data

Hmmm, I haven't been that slow since Hughesnet.
We hit speeds of 100 Mbps, but that's not the majority of the time, but we can still stream anything, the problem is, the faster we run, the more Gigs we eat up, like website streaming mini video news in the background without sound.

That kills me, before you know it, you ate up a couple of gigs of usage.

Again, my biggest issue has always been latency delays which can be several seconds.

I  was talking with a net friend who lives in Idaho.  He just got Starlink up and running.  His old unit was taking 5 to 6 hrs to upload a video on a good day.  The Starlink is giving him 140Mbps and load video's under 30 min just sitting on the ground.  When it stops snowing he will move it up on the roof of the two story house.  And he said he was paying less now then before.

Wisconsin Police Tell Residents "Do Not Call 911" When Starlink Satellite Train Passes By

The Outagamie County Sheriff's office told residents of Appleton, a city just north of Lake Winnebago, to avoid calling the police when a train of lights appears in the night sky because they're just satellites.

"We have seen a lot of questions about the long strings of lights appearing in the night sky lately. These lights are satellites, and are part of a new internet service called, Starlink. Starlink provides internet to rural and typically hard-to-service areas,"

Title: Can't Censor Starlink
Post by: Solar on September 05, 2021, 08:07:44 PM
Elon Musk Has an Amazing Message for Anyone Who Wants to Censor His Starlink Internet

Elon Musk is building his satellite-based Starlink service, but he paused launches until some new spacecraft are ready. Quarts reports that those spacecraft give Starlink a new capability — the ability to bypass the ground stations that Starlink currently depends on.

Starlink users need to be within several hundred miles of a ground station that is plugged into the internet, so the satellites can relay data back and forth between them. SpaceX is not going to be able to set up these stations in authoritarian countries, or likely many of their neighbors.

That's not just a technical issue, it's also a regulatory and censorship issue. For instance, Afghanistan's internet and smartphone access went from near zero to about 90% during the war that Joe Biden just threw away. The Taliban are heavy into censorship and are expected to clamp down very hard on free speech. That's easier to do against conventional, terrestrial internet service. But Musk's Starlink with its laser system may be able to elude Taliban censorship.

If it works, the satellites will be able to link directly to each other more efficiently. That, in turn, means that instead of needing a ground station a few hundred miles away, a user could have their data sent back and forth through the Starlink network to a ground station anywhere.

"Lasers [sic] links alleviate ground station constraints, so data can go from say Sydney to London through space, which is ~40% faster speed of light than fiber & shorter path," Musk tweeted.

That tweet prompted some questions about regulation by governments on the ground. Musk launched the perfect response.
